CCIA14 UPSTREAM MANHOLE INFILTRATION REPORT

1 OBJECTIVE

This report aims to provide a detailed account of the water seepage issue discovered in the
upstream manhole of the CCIA 14 Lifting Station. The seepage was identified during the wet well
cleaning activities of the lifting station wet well on September 16th, 2023. The objective is to
present a comprehensive analysis of the observed seepage, and recommended actions to address
the situation effectively. Potential factors contributing to this issue could include deteriorated seals,
cracks in the manhole structure, or excessive groundwater infiltration.

2 OBSERVATIONS

On Saturday, September 16th, we completed the cleaning of the CCIA14 lifting station wet well. To
initiate the cleaning process, we installed manhole stopper flanges in the upstream pipeline of the
manhole near the PS-CCIA-14 Lifting station. This was done to halt the flow of sewage water into
the pumping station wet well. Once the stopper flanges were in place, we noticed that the sewage
water inlet to the manhole had ceased. However, we observed that the water level in the isolated
manhole began to rise, indicating potential water seepage.

To address this issue, we promptly dispatched a network inspection technician equipped with all
necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). The technician conducted a thorough inspection
of the manhole for a few minutes and identified the following problems:

1. Water seepage was detected in one specific area of the manhole, which had undergone
waterproofing in July 2023 by a water proofing contractor. Annexure-B contains attached
pictures documenting this issue.

2. The waterproofing compound applied to the manhole was found to be peeling off, and we
collected the peeled-off material from the sewer pipeline connecting to the wet well during the
cleaning process. Annexure-C contains attached pictures documenting this issue.

Photographs illustrating the peeling and deposition of waterproofing compound in the sewer
pipeline connecting manhole to the wet well were captured during the cleaning process. The
removed pieces were collected and documented.

ANNEXURE-D
During the testing of the water sample collected from the infiltration, it was discovered that
there is a high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) content. This is unexpected, as the infiltration is
intended to contain sea water. TDS of tested sample is more than 10,000 mg/L. Testing

4 ROOT CAUSE

It is assumed that the water infiltration exerted such immense pressure that it effectively stripped
away the waterproofing compound. Also Civil structure is weak to withhold the water infiltration.

5 ACTION TO BE TAKEN
It is necessary to inform the waterproofing contractor once again to report this recurring issue.

6 CONCLUSION
The waterproof compound was removed due to ongoing infiltration in the manhole's internal
walls. It is assumed that waterproofing alone did not provide a permanent solution to prevent
groundwater infiltration. To find an effective solution, it is advisable to contact the waterproofing
contractor .
