Decantation is a method for separating a mixture of a liquid and a heavier solid. In this
process the solid impurities are allowed to sediment at the bottom of the container. The pure liquid is
poured out carefully from the container into another container. The solid is left behind at the bottom
of the container.

Materials needed:
• Pot
• small basin/container water
• 1 cup of rice

Procedures:
1. Get the pot and put the 1 cup of rice.
2. Put water inside the pot with rice and stir.
3. After mixing the rice and water, set it aside.
4. After a few minutes, observe what happened.
5. Separate the water from the rice by pouring the water in another container.

Uses of Sieving
Mixture with big and fine components can be separated by sieving. It involves using a strainer
or a big screen to separate the components of solid mixture. Strainer allows only the fine particles
through it and prevents the larger ones, like fine sand and rocks in the mixture of gravel and sand
