If the required strength is denoted by U (ACI Code, Section 5.3.1), and

those due to wind and seismic forces are W and E, respectively,

according to the ACI and ASCE 7-10 Codes, the required strength, U,

shall be the most critical of the following factors:

D = Dead load, L = Floor live load, Lr = Roof live load

W = Wind load, S = Snow load, E = Seismic load

f1 = 1.0 for floor where live load in excess of 100psf otherwise f1 = 0.5

f2 = 0.2 for roof configurations that shed snow otherwise 0.7

Total Earthquake Force (E)

Eh = Lateral forced due to the calculated base shear V

Ev = Vertical force due to the effects of vertical acceleration = Ca I D/2

Ev is only considered in strength design and 0 for allowable stress design

r = Redundancy or reliability factor

r = 2 - 20/[rmax (AB)0.5] , r < 1.5 and r > 1.0

AB = Area of ground floor of the building in square feet

rmax = Ratio of the shear in the most heavily loaded lateral force resisting element to the total shear in
that story

AB = 30 x 60 = 1800ft2

V = total base shear in Y-direction

rmax = story shear in internal column/ total story shear

rmax = 0.5 (V/3) / V = 0.166

r= 2 – 20/[0.166 (1800)0.5] = -0.84

r < 0 so rmin = 1.0
