Landslides victims – building resurrection

At the dawn of the New Year, on January 1st 2006, Jember city (East Java) was
devastated by floods and landslides which covered 7 districts. The
devastation, amongst others, included death of 57 people, 15 missing and
hundreds more injured. Over 2000 houses were shattered and nearly 2000
residents were evacuated. Hundreds of cattle were destroyed as were hectares
of fields. Many bridges, bus routes and railway tracks were also unusable due
to destruction and blockage.

As an expression of communal welfare, simple houses have been constructed

for victims of the floods and landslides. These houses were specifically for the
least affording victims, a total of 10 families.

These houses were constructed as a joint effort using materials from the old
houses that were still good for use.

The cost of each house was approximated at Rp. 1.500.000, totaling up to Rp.
15.000.000, which was received from concerned donors of the Jember Sai
Study Group.

Food Distribution

On 23rd April & 7th May 2006, the Sai Study Group Region 1 (North
Sumatera) in joint venture with Yayasan Perguruan Nasional Brigjen Katmso
(the SSEHV Adopted School) conducted a seva activity in the form of food
distribution at Sunggal district in Medan, North Sumatera.

A total of 1383 families received the food provisions which comprised of 5kg
rice and 5 packets of instant noodles.

The aforementioned activity was carried out at the school’s grounds & Sai
Ganesha Garden since a majority of the low welfare families lived in the
vicinity of the area.

Food Distribution

Also on the 23rd of April 2006, Sai Study Group Region 4 (Yogyakarta)
conducted food distribution as well as a medical camp in Tepus district,
Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Here, 1063 packets of rice and 900 packets of food
were distributed amongst 189 patients of the medical camp.
