Subject : Food Distribution @ Cipanjalu village – Cilengkrang District (Bandung regency)
(A Report for Prasanthi Council & Sanathana Sarathi)

FOOD DISTRIBUTION FOR HUNGER-STRICKEN VILLAGE OF CIPANJALU:

Situational Back-ground – A Prologue (Fact Sheets):

• Cipanjalu village is located in Cilengkrang District of Bandung regency in the province of

West Java (23 kilometers from Bandung, capital of West Java).
• Total residents estimated: 1,300
• Hundreds of Cipanjalu residents have been struggling to survive for the past three years; after
a new regulation was issued prohibiting residents from engaging in a farming system where
people planted vegetables among the hardwood trees in forests owned by the government
and state-owned companies. This order was issued to reduce flooding and landslides in the
area. 90% of the people (± 1,170 residents) lost their jobs as farmers and farm workers.

Tumpang Sari Farming System

• Residents used to grow cabbage, carrots, potatoes and other vegetables, which they then sold
at markets. This practice had begun since 1970, when some 150 hectares of State owned land
was cleared of trees. Growing vegetables used to allow people to earn up to Rp. 15,000
(equivalent to U$ 1.6) a day.
• Today many people are eating whatever they can, including oyek (rice made from shredded
cassava) and boiled corn.

• Working in the city was not an option as the residents had no money for transportation. They
need at least Rp. 20,000 (U$ 2.10) each person to get into the city on public transportation.
• Assistance urgently needed by all the residents was in finding jobs.
• The Regency administration had agreed to start a number of assistance programs next month
(September 2006), including the provision of cattle and 20,000 young milkfish. They (the
residents) will also be allowed to utilize part of the forest for the intercropping again.

Seva (service) conducted by Sai Study Group Bandung & Jakarta:

• On 6th of August 2006, SSG Bandung conducted a survey at Kampong Palintang of Cipanjalu
village.
o Total residents in this Kampong consist of 570 family units, of which around 60% of
them are now facing hunger.
o While waiting for the government assistance programs in helping them finding jobs for
livelihood, the families depend on monthly donations of rice from wealthier families.
o Sai Study Group Bandung took up the noble seva to provide food aids by
contributing: 300 kgs of rice and 300 packs of instant noodles.
• On 27th August 2006, SSG Bandung again conducted another service activity in the same
area, collaborating with Youth-vikas of SSG Jakarta.
o As much as 40 Sai sevadals participated in this gramma seva (by distributing food
items from house-to-house), whom were divided into three groups.
o As much as 60 packages of food supplies together with ready-to-eat food items were
distributed, which included: 10 kgs of rice, instant noodles, soy-sauce, cooking oil, milk
