Complete Microwave Technology Training System, with hybrid tee and PIN diode, Model 8090-2

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Microwave Technology Training System,
Model 8090, is part of the Lab-Volt telecommunications
training systems. It is a complete, integrated package of
hardware and courseware that allows students to perform
experiments in microwave principles and practices. The
system comes standard with all power supplies, instru-
mentation, high-quality microwave components, and
accessories required to perform the experiments. An
oscilloscope, also required, is not included. (See the
Optional Equipment section for ordering information.)
Features
The Microwave Technology Training System features are
as follows:
C produces repeatable results
C uses rugged, high-quality components designed for
educational purposes
C each component is identified with standard microwave
symbol and part number.
The standard Microwave Technology Training System,
Model 8090, includes the following:
C Microwave devices and components fabricated from
electroless-plated brass to standard X-band waveguide
dimensions.
C Waveguide flanges joined by patented precision quick
fasteners, allowing rapid assembly and disassembly of
microwave circuits.
C A Gunn diode oscillator running at 10.525 GHz in
continuous wave (CW) mode or amplitude modulated
by a 1-kHz square-wave signal.
C A crystal detector, thermistor, and slotted line used with
the Gunn Oscillator Power Supply, Power Meter, and
SWR Meter (standing-wave ratio meter) to detect
microwave signals, measure microwave power levels,
and take SWR measurements. The Gunn Oscillator
Power Supply provides power to the SWR Meter and
the Power Meter through connectors that align when
these modules are stacked on top of the power supply
unit.

The courseware accompanying Model 8090-2 covers
all the material of Microwave Fundamentals, and it further
expands on microwave technologies with the studying of
microwave tees, PIN diodes, and applications. Further-
more, the student can implement and test a wireless
video transmission system that uses a PIN diode as a
microwave AM modulator (see Figure 2).

Model 8090-3 is an add-on to Model 8090-2. It con-

sists of a Voltage Controlled RF Oscillator, a Resonant-

System courseware
The system courseware consists of comprehensive
manuals with theory, step-by-step exercises, and review
questions. Figure 6 shows the courseware flow chart.
• Microwave Basics accompanies the basic training
system (Model 8090-B). It covers the basics of micro-
wave technologies. A digital oscilloscope with signal-
averaging function, not included, is required to perform
the experiments.
• Microwave Fundamentals covers the principles of
microwave signals and their propagation; the construc-
tion and operation of microwave components; the
techniques used to measure power, attenuation, SWR,
and impedance. The experiments are performed by
using the provided Lab-Volt SWR Meter, Power Meter,
and Thermistor Mount.

The other courses are a continuation of Microwave
Fundamentals.
• PIN Diodes, Microwave Tees, and Applications teaches
the construction and operation of PIN diodes and hybrid
tees and how they are used in microwave applications.
This course requires the complete training system,

• Microwave Variable-Frequency Measurements and
A p p l i c a t i o n s teaches the ope ration of
variable-frequency oscillators (VCO's). It also teaches
three methods of measuring the frequency of micro-
wave signals and demonstrates the frequency modula-
tion and demodulation of microwave signals. T h i s
course requires the complete training system,
Model 8090-2, and the add-on Model 8090-31.

For the Student Manual PIN Diodes, Microwave Tees, and Applications, a DC ammeter and a DC voltmeter (or a single multimeter), not provided, are required to perform the exercises. Also
the following equipment is required to perform an optional exercise in this manual (that is, the wireless video transmission demonstration): a video camera (or a generator) providing an analog
signal having a maximum amplitude of 1 V peak-to-peak; a video/TV receiver compatible with the format of the generated video signal.

Model 8090-3 is an add-on to Model 8090-2. The following equipment, not included, is required to perform the exercises in the Student Manual Microwave Variable-Frequency Measurements
and Applications: a general-purpose frequency counter, an oscilloscope, and an audio signal generator.
Users who have the standard Microwave Technology Training System, Model 8090-0, can perform these exercises by buying the add-on Model 8090-3, plus the Lab-Volt PIN
Diode/RF Oscillator Controller, Model 9588.

The user must provide his own power measurement equipment, for operation at a typical frequency of 10.525 GHz, and must adapt the experiments in the Student Manual Microwave
Fundamentals in consequence. Also, an oscilloscope is required to perform certain exercises in the manual. The Lab-Volt Model 797 is recommended (see the Optional Equipment section).

A digital oscilloscope with signal-averaging function, to be provided by the user, is required to perform certain exercises in the accompanying courseware (see the Optional Equipment section).
To permit the storage of all the components in Microwave Basics, the Lab-Volt Storage Tray, Model 9599-0, can be purchased.
Also, to permit the secure mounting of microwave setups at various heights, a set of Waveguide Supports, Lab-Volt Model 9591, can be purchased.

BNC input of the PIN Diode and the diode itself. The bias and
modulation signals used to control the diode are provided by the PIN
Diode/RF Oscillator Controller, Model 9588.

modulation signals used to control the oscillator are provided by the

PIN Diode/RF Oscillator Controller Provides control and modulation signals for the Lab-Volt Voltage
Controlled RF Oscillator, Model 9511, and the Lab-Volt PIN Diode,
