1.2.1 General

The survey works were conducted in accordance with the specifications and
scope of work supplied by the client, and the standard survey procedures of
bathymetric survey in shallow waters.

1.2.2 Horizontal control

Position for the vessel during the survey was provided by Hemisphere GNSS receiver System.
The DGPS system is a combined high performance position receiver and a differential beacon
/SBAS/WAAS/Satellite Correction system in an extremely compact and fully water proof enclosure
providing high accuracy.

1.2.3 Vertical Control

Valeport MIDAS Surveyor Dual Frequency Echo Sounder integrated with a DGPS
positioning system was used during the entire survey to record geographically
referenced bathymetric data for measuring water depths. Digitized data was confirmed
by the inspection of analog profile records.

Pre-mobilization Checks:
The echo sounder system was bench checked prior to mobilization. The outboard
transducer pole was marked, from the base of the transducer shoe, at 0.1 metre
intervals (these marks were used to confirm transducer draft once the arrangement is
deployed). The Echo sounder was interfaced to the Navigation and Data Logging
computer to confirm that the digitization of depths is operational.

GMSPL – KSEB- Kallarkutty - 01– Survey Report 7

``

Installation and Calibration:

The Echo sounder system was installed and operated in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions. Portable transducer was installed rigidly to a bracket at a
suitable location on the survey vessel. The transducer shoe was positioned sufficiently
deep not to experience turbulence and aeration when the vessel steams at survey
speed. The depth of the transducer below water line was ascertained and the
correction for the draft was incorporated in the data recording parameters.
Prior to commencing survey works, the Echo sounder was calibrated against a bar
check. The procedure is to confirm the following constants:

Tx=To establish index error (combined effect of transducer depth and delays in the
recorder)
Vp=To confirm velocity of propagation of sound in water.

With the vessel stationary in the water, the Bar was lowered to at least 2m below the
transducer and the 2.0m mark on the chain was set at the water line. The apparent
depth of the transducer was noted in the deck log for future reference.

The Bar was then being lowered at regular intervals to the maximum practical depth.
The bar was allowed to settle at each depth. On recording the maximum obtainable
depth, the Bar was similarly stepped back to the surface. The digitized depth was also
be checked during the Bar calibration.

Echo sounder Settings:

The echo sounder supports the use of dual frequency of 210 k Hz and 33 K Hz.
Since the depths are very shallow, the shallow water frequency of 210 K Hz was used
throughout the survey.

Data reduction and presentation:

The system was operated following recommended manufacturer procedures. The
vertical range scale was set at 0-20 and the appropriate phase was selected to display
the reservoir bed at all times. Event marks corresponding to position fixes was
generated automatically from the on-line navigation computer interface. Prior to the
processing, the raw data files were backed up and stored. All the raw data collected
was later post processed for applying corrections related to the water level fluctuation

in the reservoir during the day of survey. The water Level during the period of survey is
given in Table- 4. Further the data was processed and referred with respect to the
Datum level of Survey -Mean Sea Level(MSL).

The offsets of the echo sounder transducer from central reference point/ GNSS
receiver point on the survey vessel were recorded as the following:
For Vessel:
· Layback : 0.00 m
· Transverse offset : 0.00m
· Transducer depth : 0.50 m

The Survey data acquisition programme Hypack 2020 was initialised in WGS-84 as
specified by the Client. Refer Appendix - A for GPS system and project survey
parameters.

Prior to the mobilization on to the Survey Boat, all systems were tested at Geo
Marine Solution Pvt. Ltd. work shop. After mobilization, a number of system
verifications were carried out to ensure that all systems were operational within the
system operating parameters and tolerances.
An area of 0.66 km2 was surveyed in accordance with the following methodology.

1.3 Topographic Survey Methodology:

For surveying the area between the present day water level on the day of survey and the
Maximum Water Level (MWL) of the reservoir, topographic survey was conducted using a
combination of equipment’s :
 GNSS with RTK and Static Positioning
 Electronic Total Station- Leica TS03 (2 sets)

GNSS with Real Time Kinematic and Static Positioning:

Positioning Systems which can function in Real time Kinematic mode and static mode,
having a Base unit and a set of Rover antenna and receiver unit. Real Time Kinematic is a
technique used to increase the accuracy of signals by using a fixed base station which
wirelessly sends out corrections to a moving receiver. By utilising these corrections,
the system can fix the position of the antenna to within 1 - 2cm .

From an architectural point of view, RTK consists of a base station, one or several rover
users, and a communication channel with which the base broadcasts information to the
users at real time.

The technique is based on the following principles:

In the neighbourhood of a clean-sky location, the main errors in the GNSS signal
processing are constant, and hence they cancel out when differential processing is used.
This includes the error in the satellite clock bias, the satellite orbital error, the ionospheric
delay and the tropospheric delay. The main errors left without correction are multipath,
interference and receiver thermal noise. Of the errors listed above, the only one which is
truly constant with respect to the user location is the satellite clock bias; the rest will show a
given dependency with the location as the rover moves away from the base station, being
the tropospheric error the first to be fully de-correlated in a few kilometres from the base.

The normal GPS system utilises L1 frequency Pseudo codes, whereas RTK-PS systems
uses carrier phase of the GNSS signals. The typical error of code pseudo range
measurements is around 1 m, compared with 5 mm error for carrier phase measurements.
However, the processing of carrier measurements is subject to the so-called carrier phase
ambiguity, an unknown integer, number of times the carrier wave length, that needs to be
fixed in order to rebuild full range measurements from carrier ones.

The phase ambiguities can be fixed using differential measurements between two reference
stations. There are different techniques available to fix them, some based on single

GMSPL – KSEB- Kallarkutty - 01– Survey Report 11

``

frequency measurements with long convergence times, other taking benefit of dual
frequency observables with shorter convergence. In general, the techniques either depend
on a high precision knowledge of the ionosphere, or assume that the two stations are close
enough so that the ionospheric differential delay is negligible when compared with the
wave-length of the carriers, around 20 cm. The latter is the approach followed in RTK,
limiting the service area to 10 or 20 km; the former is used in Wide Area RTK to cover big
service areas with base stations separated around hundreds of kilometres away Like
Country wide SBAS.

The base station broadcasts its well-known location together with the code and carrier
measurements at frequencies L1 and L2 for all in-view satellites. With this information, the
rover equipment is able to fix the phase ambiguities and determine its location relative to
the base with high precision. By adding up the location of the base, the rover is positioned
in a global coordinate framework.

The RTK technique can be used for distances of up to 10 or 20 kilometres, yielding

accuracy of a few centimetres in the rover position, to be compared with 1 m that is
achieved with code-based DGPS. Because of its high precision in controlled environments,
RTK is extensively used in surveying applications.

Electronic Total Station

Total station is an electronic / optical instrument used in modern surveying and building
construction that uses electronic transit theodolite in conjunction with electronic distance
meter (EDM). It is also integrated with microprocessor, electronic data collector and
storage system. The instrument is used to measure sloping distance of object to the
instrument, horizontal angles and vertical angles. The Microprocessor unit of the Total
Station enables for computation of data collected to further calculate the horizontal
distance, coordinates of a point and reduced level of point.

Before the commencement of Survey at Kallarkutty Dam site, The base station bench mark
as fixed at a suitable location in the vicinity. The Position was derived using the GNSS
system observation in static mode for about one hour duration and the accurate position
was fixed for the Bench Mark. The elevation / level was transferred from the level recorded
and marked at the KSEB dam site.

Further, the fixing of TBMs and measurement of elevations all along the periphery of
Kallarkutty Reservoir was done using RTK -rover in total station respectively. The entire
raw data was recorded in the RTK system and total station and stored as back up file. The

1.5 Survey Line Plans

For bathymetric survey : an area of 0.66 km2 was surveyed by running grid lines at
20.0 metre line interval line as proposed by the client. The navigation was controlled
using Hypack Software and line position was maintained throughout the survey,
within an error limit of +/- 5 % of line interval. The data recording was set at 1 Hz
interval ( one data at every one second).
For topographic Survey, the area between the present day water level at the time of
survey and the MWL (456.9 MSL) was covered at very close spaced grid. Though
the client specified grid was 10m,data was collected at much closer intervals
between water surface and MWL.
1.6 Field Data Quality Check:

Initial quality control and data processing for the surveyed site was carried out
onboard the survey vessel and at the camp office at Chithirapuram. Single beam
echo sounder, and the positioning data required for processing were logged in
Hypack RAW data format and processed using Hypack 2020. The observed raw
water depths acquired using SBES were compensated for MSL heights during
processing stage. The Topographic survey data acquired using Total Station and
GNSS RTK survey was integrated with the Hydrographic Survey data and the
combined raw data was used for plotting and contouring using Hypack and
AutoCAD.
