INTRODUCTION

Though there are a number of junior colleges in Rourkela imparting teaching facility in +2

Commerce, primary data taken from 128 students of Municipal higher secondary school

Vedvyas higher secondary school which are considered as two leading schools of smart city.

Both these colleges were established in 1978 to fulfill the higher education needs of Rourkela

Both have the same sanctioned strength of 256 scats in +2 commerce. In +2 Commerce six

subjects are taught like ACCOUNTANCY, BMS, BSM, Costing, MIL and English. The

Average marks of first 4 subjects are taken to evaluate relative performance of the students of

both the colleges.

Individual performance of two colleges cannot be compared. Therefore the average marks of

four commerce subjects of 128 students of these two colleges are taken for comparison. For

making comparative analysis three ty pes of averages i.e. mean, median and mode of each

college are calculated and the result is interpreted on the last page.

1
METHODOLOGY

The methodology observed for the comparative analysis consists of the following steps:

1. Presentation of data in the form of continuous series: The average marks of 128

students of each college are collected in simple form. These data are converted into

continuous series by taking 10 as the class interval.

2. Computation of Arithmetic Mean: The Arithmetic mean of the average marks of

cach college is computed by Direct method. The formula used is,

∑ fm
X̄ =
n

3. Median mark of each college is calculated: First the median class is located and

then the median is calculated by using the interpolation technique.

4. Modal mark of colleges are calculated: The modal class is located by inspection

and then modes of colleges are calculated by using formula.

5. Comparison is made on the basis of mean, median and Mode.

CONCLUSION

The computation of average performance of the students of two junior colleges can be

summed up as under:

Municipal H.S. School Vedvyas H.S. School

Mean 70.80 70.54

Median 72.63 74.78

Mode 74.16 83.88

The arithmetic mean is the most commonly used measure of central tendency. The variation

in the mean mark of the two colleges is negligibly small. Therefore we can conclude that the

performance of both the colleges is almost same.

Median being a positional average shows the mark scored by the student in the middle

position. The median mark of Vedvyas students shows 25 increase. This leads us to the

conclusion that the middle most Vedvyas student is slightly better than the middle most

Municipal student.

Mode reflects the frequency of qualitative performance of the two colleges. The students of

Vedvyas H.S. School is qualitatively better than the students of Municipal H.S. School as it's

mode is approximately 10% higher.

ABSTRACT

an average represents the central tendency and captures the common denominator of a large

number of figures. Whenever it is desirable to make a comparative study of two homogenous

group of quantitative data, it is possible only through the comparison of their averages.

Averages are of three types; mathematical averages like A.M., G.M. And H.M. Positional

averages like median and average based on number of occurrence of figures like mode.

In this project I have made comparison on the basis of arithmetic mean, median and mode.

Though there are a number of higher secondary schools in Rourkela imparting teaching
