Caring
● Her theory The Philosophy and Science of Caring by Jean Watson
examines how nurses express caring to their patients. She believes
that a holistic approach to health care is essential to nursing
practice.
● The nursing model also states that caring can be demonstrated and
practiced by nurses. Caring for patients promotes development; a
caring atmosphere accepts a person as they are while also
anticipating what they might become.
● Watson began developing her theory while serving as assistant dean
of the University of Colorado's undergraduate program, and it grew
into planning and administering the university's nursing Ph.D.
program.
● Watson’s Theory makes 7 assumptions as well as major concepts
which includes human beings, health, environment, and nursing.
● According to Watson's theory, the nursing process involves the same
steps as the scientific research method: assessment, plan,
intervention, and evaluation.

Biography of the Theorist ● Jean Watson is an American nurse theorist and professor who was
born on June 10, 1940 in Welch, West Virginia, USA. She is known
for theory in human need/human care.
● She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in 1964, a Master’s degree in
psychiatric and mental health nursing in 1966, and earned her PhD
in educational psychology and counseling in 1973
● She was the President of the National League for Nursing and the
Dean of Nursing at the University Health Sciences Center.
● She was awarded six honorary doctorates from institutions in the
United States, as well as three honorary doctorates from international
universities.
● She was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Sciences in Nursing by
the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, in 2010.
