Hormones in the Body

The nervous system is a network of nerves and cells. It carries messages to and from the
brain and spinal cord to the different parts of the body. During the early 20th century, it was
believed to control all communications. This, however, was challenged by the experiments made
by Baylis and Starling in 1902 on chemical secretion. They observed the peristaltic wave and
isolated a substance that they called secretin. Starling coined the term hormones to denote such
substances released in the endocrine gland. These are carried by the bloodstream to unconnected
parts, where, in extremely small quantities, are capable of influencing their functions.

Hormones serve as chemical messengers released into the bloodstream to act on an organ
in other parts of the body. However, only target cells with compatible receptors are equipped to
respond. They control reproduction, metabolism, growth and development, and even mood. Women
are largely governed by estrogen and progesterone, the female sex hormones. Low estrogen among
women slows or prevents sexual development. High estrogen levels cause weight gain, low mood,
and severe premenstrual syndrome. When hormonal imbalance happens; problems with weight gain,
mood issues, and even death might happen.

To address hormonal imbalance, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is being introduced.

Bioidentical hormones help people who experience low or unbalanced hormones such as sleeping
problems, fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, and memory loss. Hormone therapies also help in
producing physical changes like those of the transgender.

Hormones play a crucial role in man‛s daily functions as well as with man‛s critical milestones.
These signals how to do things and when to do them.
