Usability Test Analysis

Dr. Will Kurlinkus

Today your Ideate is due by Midnight

What’s Due Friday your Design materials are due

& When:
This is Our Test section will be due with your midterm project

Last Week of
This Project Full midterm is due: Monday 10.30

Your usability test needs to have 4 participants--

you will submit your notes as evidence of the test.
What Am I Expecting
of your Final Figma?
Synthesizing Usability Data
1. Affinity Diagramming: Grouping data by common themes or
relationships, often done on sticky notes.
• Use a different color sticky note for each user.
• Put one user observation on each note.
• Group stickies by affinities: issues with navigation, missing pieces,
etc.
2. Find patterns and themes :
• Patterns: groupings of similar observations: “4/5 participants were
upset that there was no confirmation page after purchase”
• Themes: placing your patterns into user centered language for
design: “Most participants want to confirm the details of their order
before booking.”

Template for patterns and themes: It was observed that # out

of # participants (insert observation from research). This
means that (insert theme based on that observation).
Example: It was observed that 3 out of 5 participants (wanted a
search function). This means that (some participants were
confused about QRs and wanted another way to search artists).

Come up with 1 pattern and
theme pair—you will need 3-
4 for your final portfolio
Coming up With Design Insights

1. Grounded in real data

2. Answer your research plan’s research questions
3. Easy to Understand
4. Increase empathy for the user experience
5. Inspire direct redesign action

Create a theme and insight pair for each of your Gmail points
It was observed that 3 out of 5 participants (wanted a search function).
This means that (some participants were confused about QRs and
wanted another way to search artists).
Based on the theme that: (some participants were confused about QRs
and wanted another way to search artists), an insight is: (users want
multiple ways to get to artists—perhaps a search bar and a broader find
artist button before getting to the QR function).
Transform your own theme into an insight
Prioritizing
Insights for
Redesign
• Priority 0: Insights that
prevented users from
accomplishing the main flow?
Parts of design where users felt
tricked.? Are there parts of your
design that are inaccessible?
• P1: User can still the main flow
but maybe not easily/well.
• P2: Not immediately related to
primary flow
Prioritize your
insight
