WHAT ARE MNEMONICS?


Mnemonic are memory tools that serves as bridges
to help you recall information from long term
memory
They create some form of an association
Mnemonics may be used sparingly, to create
association and retrieve cues for information that is
otherwise difficult to recall

ACRONYMS
Acronym is a word or phrase made up by using
the first letter of key words in a list of items to
remember
 It forms an association and work as a retrieval
cue to recall the original items in the list
ACROSTIC
An acrostic is a sentence made by using the first letter of
key words in a list of items to remember.
Letters can be used in their original order, or can be
rearrange the letters to create a sentence
Example: Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally , the first letter
represent the order of operation in a maths problem
Parentheses, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, and
Subtraction.
WORDS ASSOCIATION
If you have strong language or musical skills ,
you can use those skill to create a word
associations with rhymes, jingles, short song an
raps that work as memory tools to recall
information.
PICTURE ASSOCIATION
To use picture associations, you need to actively look for
and think about ways to create simple association that will
be easy to remember and use to recall information
Actively search for a familiar object or pictures to use in
your association
Visualise the shape or colours of the object
SUGGESTION FOR USING PICTURE
ASSOCIATION
To remember a person’s name : associate the name with
object or another person you know with that name
To remember a definition: Associate the meaning with an
object that has a similar characteristics
To remember a specific number: find and visualise a
number pattern within the number
 To remember a cause effect relationship: Picture items as
an action movie
THE LOCI METHOD
The LOCI method is mnemonic technique that
involves association items or topics with specific
rooms in a familiar building.
The loci method can be used to memorise points in
a speech or essay
Steps of creating a loci method
Items: make a list of the items you need to remember
Floor plan: Draw a floor plan of a familiar location
Picture: on paper or mentally, attach pictures
Practice: Visually practice walking through all the rooms
and recite the important information associated with the
items in the room.
