One Page Sight Word Stories
Directions: One Page Sight Word Stories are great to use in whole or small group. They
can be used during guided reading groups, independent work time, centers, or tutoring
sessions. In addition, they are easy to use for homework or for monitoring student
reading skills.
I like to have students look at the words before attempting to read. I encourage the
students to highlight or circle the words that they already know. Next, I ask the
students to look at the unknown words and to attack these words using reading
strategies like lips the fish, chunky monkey, flippy the dolphin, etc. Also, I encourage
them to look at the pictures to assist them in identifying the unknown words.
Different types of One Page Sight Word Stories:
a. Pocket Chart Story

Making Words
Directions: Depending on the students, I will vary the activity. At the beginning of the year, I
will ask the kids to build various words and guide them in this process.
For example, I will say, “make red” and “now, make bed”, and “now make bid”, etc.
After the kids have practice with this activity and developed an understanding of the skill of
making words, I will have them to make their own words independently or with a partner.

For more fun, I ask the students to figure out my special word by using all the letters. Kids
love trying to figure out the seasonal word.
Great for small group or whole group. I like to create a smartboard document so that the
students can manipulate the letters and so that all students can see the process of making
and changing words. I look to see if the students have to clear the letter before making a
new word or can they use the letters from the previous word.
For example, if we have bed and I want them to make bid, can they just put an “i” in the place
of the “e”.

This can be used as a center activity or a pocket chart activity. For easy clean up, store
pieces in a Ziploc baggie.
Directions: Use the letters to make words for Back to School.

Ex.: to, tool, cool, boo, bot, bat, sat, hat, cat, cot, lot, hot, hoot, loot, shoot, shot, so, at, chat, scat, that, clock, lock, tock, sock,
stock, shock, block, black, back, lack, sack, tack, shack, hack, hook, took, look, shook, cook etc.

Build a Sentence
Directions: Discuss the basic concepts of a sentence: capital
letter, spaces, and punctuation. Also, talk about how the sentence
needs to make sense. Review the words listed at the bottom of
the page. Have students find the word with the capital letter and
the word with the punctuation mark. See if the students can then
determine the sentence. Students will cut and glue the words.
Then, write the sentence making sure to have space between each
word. Finally, they draw a picture to go along with the sentence.
Encourage the students to read the sentence to themselves and to
a friend. This activity can be done whole group or independently. I
generally do this whole group on the smart board the first few
times in addition to the student sheet.
