WATER CYCLE PROJECT

1. Materials

- Transparent plastic box

- Water

- Clay

- Sand or earth

- Sprouted lentils (cotton, lentil seeds, water)

- Plastic wrap

- Ice cubes

- Reading lamp

- Space heater

2. Procedure

1. Plant lentil seeds in cotton and water them (It takes 2-3 weeks). Keep them
moist at all times. Wait until they are 3-4 cm tall.

2. Model the clay in the shape of a mountain

3. Fill the plastic box with a bit of sand and lay the “mountain” and the lentils with
the cotton

4. Fill the box with water. Do not cover the mountain nor the lentils.

5. Place the plastic wrap over the top of the plastic box to cover the opening.

6. Place the ice cubes on the plastic wrap, directly over the mountain.

7. Turn the reading lamp on, pointing at the mass of water.

8. Wait until water starts to evaporate and the first drops of water start to show
up below the ice cubes.

9. If the drops do not show up, use a space heater to provoke more evaporation of
water.

10. Shake the box in order to force “raining”.

11. Observe the rest of the water cycle phases.

3. Tasks

1ª) Take pictures and videos (with your mobile phone) of the assembly step by
step.

2ª) Answer the following questions?

- What represents the Sun in the assembly?

- Why does water drops form below the ice cubes?

- How do we call to the process by which water drops form?

- What phases of the water cycle have you observed? Evaporation?

Transpiration? Condensation? Precipitation? Surface run-off? Infiltration?
Accumulation? Elaborate.

3ª) Make a power point or make a short video (i.e. with vivavideo, powerdirector)
showing the procedure and explaining the water cycle. Use the pictures and videos
you made. Answer all the questions from 2ª) through your video or power point.
