Engineering involves getting materials from nature and engineer it to make a

device, it is one of the 4 progressions of engineering, the primal progression. Hence, by
studying crystal structures, engineers would know the properties and performance of a
material since it is very dependent on its crystal structure. One example is a graphite
and a diamond, graphite are materials that can be found on the tip of our pencil lead, it
is soft and dark colored, on the other hand diamond is considered as the hardest
material on earth. One could be easily broken, and the other is extremely hard, two
opposite minerals that has the same origin, carbon. Graphite and diamond where both
made up of one carbon element but differs on their crystal structure, graphite has a
crystal structure of a loosely bonded sheet while diamond has a carbon atoms that
stacked tightly together to that forms a cubic crystal structure which makes it into a
material that is very strong. Therefore, studying crystal structure is important in
determining the properties of a material that would be used in engineering to give the
desired outcome the client and engineers desire.
