Fear & Trembling

CLEVE MALLORY
FROM YOUR DISCIPLESHIP & STUDENT PASTOR CMALLORY@EASTMONT.ORG

At this time of year, many in our world turn their attention to fright and terror. We enjoy Halloween and the innocent
fun it allows children as they dress in costumes and collect candy. However, in recent years, we’ve seen the
“innocence” of the day and its activities become a fixation with the supernatural, terror, and all things scary. Why
are so many in our society obsessed with fear and terror? The Bible speaks of fear in a variety of ways. There are
hundreds of occurrences in Scripture where God calls His people to NOT FEAR. Yet, in Philippians we’re called to
“work out [our] own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phil. 2:12). So do we fear? Or do we not fear? Which is it?
what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God,
to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul… You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve
him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear. He is your praise.
Deuteronomy 10:12, 20-21
Fear is a natural human emotion experienced at all ages and stages of life. Our fears develop in a variety of ways,
but the presence of “fear” is a universal experience. Our bodies naturally react to fear with trembling. So when God
directs us to NOT FEAR, He isn’t condemning us for being “scaredy-cats.” Instead, He is speaking into our weakness
and reminding us to keep our fears in perspective. God is to be the greatest object of our “fear.” He is the Lord of
all creation, yet He loves us and longs for us to be in relationship with Him.
Fearing God rightly elicits a natural response in our lives. First, we walk with Him, learning of His character and
desires, developing the foundations of our relationship with Him. Then, as we walk, we begin to truly love Him, and
as that love deepens, we find ourselves serving Him and serving others as Jesus did.
As we fear God rightly according to Deuteronomy 10:12-21, we will find ourselves fulfilling the words of Paul in
Philippians 2:12. The outcome of a life lived rightly in the fear of God is a life marked by holiness and humility that
results in the praise of God (hallelujah)! This October, and every month of the year, lets direct our fear to its proper
object (God alone) so we can experience a life with the proper outcomes.
