CLEVE MALLORY
From Your Student Pastor CMALLORY@EASTMONT.ORG

“Sleep is something we enjoy but never seem to get enough of. In my family, we stay busy with sports, school, homework,
church activities, and so forth. The little sleep we get is ended abruptly by an alarm clock (followed by a snooze button or
two). On the rare occasion extra sleep is allowed, I take it. But is it possible that without knowing, my active lifestyle
devoted to my own passions has allowed a spiritual laziness to set in?
Malachi was the last of God’s recognized prophets to the people of Israel in the Old Testament. Malachi ministered some
450 years prior to the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. God’s people spent 70 years exiled from their homeland
before being granted the opportunity to return and rebuild their nation. They rebuilt the Temple in Jerusalem, but the
manifest glory of the LORD never filled the place like it had in the days of Solomon and thereafter. A cynicism crept in, and
the Israelites lapsed into what appears to be a dead orthodoxy. In other words, their doctrine was right, but there was no
zeal. Their worship was diluted, and their morals were compromised. The prophet, Malachi, voiced a wake-up call for God’s
people to renew their commitment to the LORD.
Reading Malachi in our #KnowTheWord campaign, I can’t help but see a correlation in my own soul and in our church. The
people in Malachi’s day did not bear the marks of a covenant, forgiven people who understood the task at hand. They
desired less to serve God and more to serve themselves. Sound familiar? It’s easy to generally agree that our church and
families bear the same issues of laziness as Malachi’s contemporaries. But it’s rare that we identify the specific ways we
have fallen asleep to the true aspects that God values most. Consider these questions as you reflect on the teachings
from Malachi:
Do I ever consider how my current lifestyle HELPS or HINDERS God’s Kingdom?
Do my personal preferences in worship reveal more about ME or more about JESUS?
Does the faithful preaching of God’s Word cause me to ACT or leave me UNMOVED?
Do I ever speak about Christ in settings away from the church or church activities?
OUR CHURCH For the past eight weeks, Eastmont 4- & 5-year-
FAMILY olds have been participating in a “Preparing for
the Pew” class. They have been learning all
SYMPATHY TO about worship! They have learned the answers
to the following questions:
Jeannette Long in the loss of her
brother, Joe Frank Coxwell, who Who do we worship?
passed away on September 22, What is worship?
2022. Why do we worship?
Where do we worship?
When do we worship?
How does worship change us?

They have heard stories about people in the Bible who worshipped God.
In addition, they have been introduced to the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.
They have practiced finding the books of the Bible where the Bible stories are
found.
The children have watched parts of the Eastmont worship service on live stream,
being taught about the Eastmont staff members and about the different ways we
worship during the service. Recently they have begun attending the first half of the
service, participating in the songs, prayer, Scripture, and offering.
