WELCOME!
The Color Catalog Volumes 1 and 2 have been used by thousands of artists, designers and
creatives around the world since 2018. They have become so useful to so many people, and I’ve
been overwhelmed by the positive feedback!
But there’s one question that has come up time and time again - “where can I find the pencil
numbers for these?”
Until now, I had recommended using 3rd party apps and matching colors by eye, but after trying
these tools for myself, I realised that they were not the most accurate source and were not the best
tools for most colorists. I hadn’t created the references myself, because there are so many different
brands of pencils and markers, and it would take 20-40 hours to swatch each one manually. But
after so many requests, I realized that it was the best thing I could do to help you find the right
colors. So my team and I got to work and have put The Color Catalog Companion together
for you! As we add more brands, we will email these files to you separately as a part of your
purchase.

This Companion is for the Faber-Castell Polychromos Colored Pencils.

It was swatched by hand in 2020 from the set of 120 pencils that I personally own against a
printed copy of The Color Catalog from my laser printer.
Things to consider when matching colors:
Colors will always vary between different screens, different

devices, different printers and different brands of pencils or
markers. This makes it nearly impossible to find a perfect match
for each color palette, so this is not the goal. Instead, the goal
of using a color palette is to find colors that look good together.
When these colors are printed out, they won’t look the same as
they do on your device, and that’s ok. The printed colors will still
work well together, so you can choose whether to match your
pencils to the colors you see on your screen or the colors you see
on the page.
Because colored pencils come in limited ranges, not every color

has a matching pencil, so just do your best to find the closest
match. Sometimes this may have a slightly different hue or value
to the original color, but it should still work well in the overall
palette. If you’re unsure, try several options on a scrap piece
of paper first and decide which ‘feels’ right to you. Trust your
instincts!
If you want to find an exact match, you can do so by mixing multiple colors together until you find
the right color. I have a free color mixing chart you can access on my website to help with this.
I also recommend swatching all your colors on a page first- it’s much easier to match your colors
from a page than from the individual pencils. Check back regularly on my website for more
swatching resources and new color tools coming soon!
Remember that these color palettes are just a guide: There’s no right or wrong way to use them.
You can use as few or as many of the colors from these palettes as you like, and you can explore
your own combinations with other colors as well.
