Lesson 1

 Nutrition – connection of food to your health or well-being; process of taking food


that contain the nutrients you need for healthy growth and development
 Proteins – build and repair body tissues (Ex. poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese,
beans, nuts and tofu)
 Carbohydrates – main source of energy
o simple carbohydrates – give quick energy for the body for the reason that
they are easy to digest like fresh fruits, table sugar, and honey
o complex carbohydrates – many sugar molecules linked together; needed
to be broken down into simpler molecules for absorption like brown rice,
oatmeal, and wheat bread

 Fats – taken in small amounts; energy-storage nutrients that are essential for
health like butter, vegetable oil, margarine and other dairy products
 Vitamin and Minerals – organic compounds; provide energy and keep the body
healthy

Lesson 2

 The Food Blocks


 Grains – provide energy and promote healthy nervous system like bread,
cereal, rice, and pasta
 Vegetable and fruits – supply body with vitamins A and C for good eyesight
and helps body resist infections
 Milk – supplies calcium, vitamin B2, and protein for bones and teeth, skin and
good vision
 Meat, Crops – protein, niacin, iron, and thiamine
 Fats, oil, and sweets – provide additional energy and help the body store
vitamins A, D, and E.

The Nutrition Facts Label – marker found on the exterior package of processed food
to inform consumers of the quantity of nutrients in each serving
Pinggang Pinoy – developed by Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) of DOST
together with WHO, DOH, and National Nutrition Council ; envisioned to work hand in
hand with the food pyramid guide providing a visual tool guide to Filipinos on
recommended portions per meal for each three food groups – go, grow, glow

Lesson 3

 Eating disorder – a serious condition in which an individual engages in abnormal


eating habits resulting to severe harm to the body
 Anorexia Nervosa – eating disorder characterized by self-starvation; triggered by
intense fear of being overweight
 Bulimia – eating disorder in which a person relentlessly tries to stay thin by going
through periods of starvation and then binges on a large amount of food to forcibly
eliminate his or her body by vomiting called purging , or taking laxatives, and
diuretics or excessive exercise to burn off the calories
 Binge Eating Disorder – serious condition frequently caused by emotional
instability, when a person cannot control how much they eat in a short period of
time; no attempt of purge; eats junk foods and usually eat alone; may become
obese or risk diabetes, highblood pressure, and heart disease
