RESUME-WRITING TIPS

The purpose of a resume is to summarize your employable skills & abilities, provide current
contact information and document you past work experience. A resume is your “first
impression” to a prospective employer.

Remember:

 Keep resume to one-page


 Use action verbs in the past-tense to describe the duties of your work/volunteer
experience (ex. Greeted customers in a friendly manner, Supervised children ages 3 to 5,
Performed office administrative duties, such as: filing, photocopying and typing)
 Use reverse-chronological order (most recent to oldest) for your work/volunteer
experience

Constructing Your Resume

Career Objective
This section is to get a specific type of job. (ex. To acquire a position as a salesperson in the
clothing retail industry.)

Profile
A profile is a professional summary of your skills and focus area. Do not write in the 1st person
using “I”, instead, use fragments to highlight your points. Keep to a maximum of 3 sentences.
(ex. A hardworking and motivated student at Byrne Creek Secondary School. High academic
achievement, with Honour Roll standing and awards in Business Education. A bilingual
individual, fluent in both English and French, with excellent communications and interpersonal
skills. Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office software, with accurate typing speed of
50 wpm. )

Skills and Qualifications


Using point-form, highlight your best skills AND skills related to the job you are applying to.

Work Experience
Remember to list the most recent to oldest in this section. Using the worksheet, you must
include: dates, job title, city, company name and duties.

Volunteer Experience
If you do not have work experience, you must list volunteer experience. Think about any unpaid
work that you might have done through school, your community or church. The format should
follow the same as the work experience section.

Education
You should include your current high school, location, your current grade and any other
educational information, such as courses of interest and awards.

References (optional)
Do not include names and contact information here, you will be writing that in a separate page to
give when an interview takes place. Instead, write “References provided upon request.”
