Handout 3.4: CV Writing Tips
Include relevant information only: Your CV should not include all details about your life!
For example, if you are applying for a job as a computer programmer, you do not need
to include in your CV the summer job you did being a waiter when you were in high
school.
Be professional: Keep it simple, clear and neat.
Be concise: Limit to 1 -2 pages.
Be accurate: Do a spell check and proof read at least twice to guarantee there are no
spelling or grammatical errors.
Be consistent: Use proper punctuation, uniform highlighting, verb tense, spacing, etc.
Use action words to describe your previous experience: Examples are provided,
managed, participated, operated, reported, and so on.
Highlight previous duties that can help in your current application: Read the job
advertisement carefully and try to emphasize your previous experience and completed
tasks with what is required by the job you are now applying for.

Some formatting suggestions:

Use bullets to describe duties/responsibilities of previous work
Spell out acronyms the first time it appears, put the acronym in parentheses and then
use the acronym after that.
CV should be typed. Font size should be between 10 and 12 points.

Dear Sir/Madam:

Re/Ref: Job Application as Receptionist

I am applying for the position of receptionist. The vacancy was advertised on March 12th, 2013 in the
Philippine Star Newspaper. The position seems to fit very well with my experience and career interests.

Your position requires experience in computer applications, financial literacy, and the ability to
speak English and Filipino. I have completed my high school, and am fluent in English and Filipino. I
can work well with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. My practical experience at Exotic
Adventures as a typist, front desk officer and as a cashier gave me exposure to different situations
and working with varied people. Similarly, at Jean Tan, I was able to gain experiences in working
within a team. Additionally, I have worked as a cashier in my father's mini market, where I gained a
lot of experience in managing money as well as customer care. My enclosed CV provides more
details on my qualifications.

I will be happy to come for an interview to discuss more on my skills and interests.

Truly yours,

Patricia Maria Campos
