Sheet No. 6 – Planes II (Traces, Oblique Plane and Auxiliary plane

method)
Q1. Show by means of traces, each of the following planes (Refer to problem no.12-1, ND Bhatt)
(a) Perpendicular to the H.P. and the V.P.
(b) Perpendicular to the H.P. and inclined at 30˚ to the V.P.
(c) Parallel to and 40 mm away from the V.P.
(d) Inclined at 45° to the H.P. and perpendicular to the V.P.
(e) Parallel to the H.P. and 25 mm away from it.

Ans: (a) The H.T. and the V.T. are in a line perpendicular to xy.
(b) The H.T. is inclined at 30° to xy; the V.T. is normal to xy; both the traces intersect in xy.
(c) The H.T. is parallel to and 40 mm away from xy. It has no V.T.
(d) The H.T. is perpendicular to xy; the V.T. makes 45° angle with xy; both intersect in xy.
(e) The V.T. is parallel to and 25 mm away from xy. It has no H.T.

Q2. Draw the projections of a regular hexagon of 25 mm side, having one of its sides in the H.P.
and inclined at 60° to the V.P. and its surface making an angle of 45° with the H.P. (Use
Auxiliary Plane Method to solve the same.) (Refer to problem no.12-8, ND Bhatt)
Auxiliary Top
Auxiliary or View
Final Front view

First Top view

Ans: (i) Draw the hexagon in the top view with one side perpendicular to xy. Project the first front
view b'a'c'f'd'e' in xy.

(ii) Draw b'a'c'f'd'e' front view on xy and draw the lines of projection at an angle of 45° to obtain
the auxiliary top view as explained in the next step to represent its inclination with the H.P.

(iii)Taking b’a’ as the reference draw another reference line x1y1 (Auxiliary inclined plane)and
project the second top view taking the distance of individual points from the top view of abcdef
from xy reference line. Eg. b’a(from first top view drawn) =b’a(using the compass mark this
distance on the new inclined projection).

(iv) By the same process explained in step (iii) mark all the distances using a compass and draw
the Auxiliary Top View by joining these points.

(v) To represent its inclination with the V.P. of 60° draw another reference line x2y2 (Auxiliary
Vertical Plane) inclined at an angle of 60° with the ‘ab’ edge drawn in the auxiliary top view.

(vi) Now draw the projection lines passing through the auxiliary top view vertices perpendicular
to the x2y2 (Auxiliary Vertical Plane)

(vii) Reproduce the Auxiliary Front view by taking the distances of a’,b’,c’,d’,e’and f’ from
reference line x1y1 and mark the individual distances of each point on to the respective projection
line on Auxilary Vertical plane taking x2y2 as the reference.

(viii) Reproduce the auxiliary front view or the final front view by joining these point as shown in
the Auxiliary or Final Front view
Q3. A semicircular disc of 60 mm diameter has its straight edge in the VP and inclined to HP at
45˚. The surface of the plate makes an angle of 30˚ with the VP. Draw the projections. (Use
Auxiliary plane method).

(i) Draw the semicircle in the front view with its straight edge in VP. Project the top view abcde
in xy.

(ii) Draw the lines of projection at an angle of 60° to obtain the auxiliary front view to represent
its inclination with the V.P.

(iii)Taking e,a point as the reference draw another reference line x1y1 at angle of 30° (Auxiliary
Vertical Plane) and project the Auxiliary Front view taking the distance of individual points from
the front view of a’b’c’d’e’ from xy reference line.

(iv) Draw the Auxiliary Front View by joining these points.

(v) To represent its inclination with the H.P. of 45° draw another reference line x2y2 (Auxiliary
Inclined Plane) inclined at an angle of 45° with the a’e’ edge drawn in the Auxiliary Front view.

(vi) Now draw the projection lines passing through the auxiliary front view vertices perpendicular
to the x2y2 (Auxiliary Inclined Plane)

(vii) Reproduce the Auxiliary Top view by taking the distances of a, b, c, d and e from reference
line x1y1 and mark the individual distances of each point on to the respective projection line on
Auxiliary Inclined plane taking x2y2 as the reference.

(viii) Reproduce the auxiliary top view or the final top view by joining these points.
