PRIMARY SOURCES

Concept
Primary sources are typically regarded as firsthand information or data generated
by witnesses or participants in previous events. Primary sources are distinguished not
by their format, but by the information they provide and their relevance to the research
subject.

Definition
In the study of history as an academic discipline, a primary source (also called
original source or evidence) is an artifact, document, diary, manuscript, autobiography,
recording, or other source of information that was created at the time under study. It
serves as an original source of information about the topic.

Example
• Original documents, such as journals, speeches, manuscripts, letters, interviews,
records, eyewitness reports, and autobiographies
• Scholarly empirical works such as research papers, clinical reports, case studies,
and dissertations
• Works of art such as poetry, music, video, and photography
