Homework 1

Problem 1
A system consisting of liquid water undergoes a process. At the end of the process, some
of the liquid water has frozen, and the system contains liquid water and ice. Can the
system be viewed as being a pure substance during the process? Explain.

Problem 2
20 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is fed to a cylinder having a volume of 20 m 3 and initially
containing 15 kg of CO2 at a pressure of 5 bar. Later a pinhole develops and the gas
slowly leaks from the cylinder. (a) Determine the specific volume, in m 3/kg, of the CO2 in
the cylinder initially. Repeat for the CO 2 in the cylinder after the 10 kg has been added. (b)
Plot the amount of CO2 that has leaked from the cylinder, in kg, versus the specific volume
of the CO2 remaining in the cylinder. Consider v ranging up to 1.5 m3/kg.

Problem 3
A piston –cylinder assembly fitted with a paddle wheel contains, air, initially at P1=
50Lbf/in2., T1= 540F and V1=4ft3. The air undergoes a process to a final state where P2=
20Lbf/in2, V2=9ft3 . During the process, the paddle wheel transfer energy TO the air by
work in the amount 10Btu, while the air transfers energy by work TO the piston in the
amount 14Btu.

Assuming ideal gas behavior, calculate for air

(a) Mass

(b) Temperature final sate

Heat transfer, in Btu.

Problem 4

5 kg of steam contained within a piston–cylinder assembly undergoes an expansion from

state1, where the specific internal energy is u1 = 2709.9 kJ/kg,to state 2, where u2 =
2659.6 kJ/kg. During the process, there is heat transfer to the steam with a magnitude of
80 kJ. Also, a paddle wheel transfers energy to the steam by work in the amount of 18.5
kJ. There is no significant change in the kinetic or potential energy of the steam.
Determine the energy transfer by work from the steam to the piston during the process, in
kJ.
