everything we do, and we absolutely do not compromise on it. Even one accident is
one too many. So, if it isn’t safe, don’t do it.” Please see full Health & Safety Policy

Each year:
Nearly 1.7 billion passenger journeys are made – more than twice as many as in
1995.
More people use the railway than at any point since the 1920s – when the network
was almost twice its current size.
This ever-increasing demand means that at peak times there is no space left on the
busiest parts of the network, which leads to congestion and delays.
But… there is still some way to go to create a railway fit for 21st century Britain.
We are investing more than £25bn in developing our infrastructure between 2014 and
2019, so that we can deliver more services and better journeys.
We are also exploring and defining ways in which we can harness the power of digital
technology to help increase the network’s capacity in the longer-term future.
Changing our behaviour is the only way we can become the high-performing, commercial
organisation that Britain needs.
You will have your own ideas of what changing these key behaviours - being customer-
driven, accountable, challenging and collaborative - mean to you and to your part of the
business; the following list is not exhaustive:

In April 2012 we created a new, regionally based projects delivery structure with four
regions, a focus on signalling & track, and separate programme streams for major projects
to deliver major renewal and enhancement infrastructure in each area.
Our focus is to renew and enhance the rail infrastructure and to deliver our commitments
for the future with increased efficiency and value for money through effective planning of
activities and resources.
Our Objectives
• Market competitive
• A sustainable business; by sustainable we mean
self-supporting, affordable and attractive in the
market place
Detailed design and development of the single best option identified by Network
Development that can be delivered on budget and on time
Access and planning of work banks in advance to ensure timely delivery and minimal
disruption to our customers
Our capabilities define the areas of our business that make us an effective deliverer.
These capabilities provide a focus for our business strategy and help inform future
improvement initiatives.
Formed in April 2012, the IP Southern Region is responsible for capital expenditure
projects in London and the South East, encompassing civils, buildings, electrification and
plant, and enhancements projects.
The Southern region numbers around 500 employees, predominantly split out over a
central team and route delivery organisations, each closely aligned with their clients who
operate and maintain the infrastructure - Anglia, South East and Wessex.
As of August 2014, the South East delivery team of IP Southern is based alongside its key
client, the South East Route in Network Operations, at the Cottons Centre, London
Bridge.
The team complete projects covering the full range of railway infrastructure but
predominately complete Buildings and Civils, Telecoms, and Electrification & Plant
projects.
5.4.3 Enhancements
Still to be completed
My team and I are committed to ensuring that our people reach their full potential. I would
therefore encourage you to take some time to consider your own personal development
and to speak to your line manager about how you can continue to learn and grow. ”
Francis Paonessa
Managing Director, Infrastructure Projects
6.2.2 You will need to set objectives with your Line Manager, and your progress against
these objectives will later be reviewed twice every year (interim and final). The
form will look like the below:
6.2.3 Upon beginning your role, it is important you set a date for setting these
objectives. You may also want to book in performance reviews at this point.
6.3.1 1 to 1s are a more informal and regular way of handling performance review. It is
important you have regular discussions with your Line Manager about:
6.4.1 Agreeing goals within a Personal Development Plan (PDP) is a key element in
supporting your team members to be better every day and provides individuals
with an opportunity to:
Identify any gaps in skills, knowledge and experiences that may be needed in
the future
Consider development activities for discussion and agreement with their line
manager and regularly review their own progress
