“Safety isn’t about statistics. It isn’t separate from our business. It’s central to
everything we do, and we absolutely do not compromise on it. Even one accident is
one too many. So, if it isn’t safe, don’t do it.” Please see full Health & Safety Policy
Statement. Please review our Safety Vision below:

2.9.1 In the Cottons Centre, we follow the principles of ‘Agile Working’ – this means
staff do not have a fixed desk, but instead are able to sit anywhere within their
‘Zone’. Zones are designated for each team, and are detailed in the floorplan
below. We follow a set of desk rules also detailed below.

Please speak to your Team Organiser or Zone Manager for further clarification.

Desk Rules

 We have aligned the number of desks against each team’s headcount, so please ensure
to sit in the correct zone to reduce the chance of desk usage issues.

 If you would like to sit in a Zone which you are not approved to sit in, please first check
with the relevant Zone Manager or their Team Organiser.

 If you are not present at a desk for more than 2 hours, please clear and vacate the desk
for use by others.

Network Rail run, maintain and develop Britain's rail tracks,
signalling, bridges, tunnels, level crossings and many key
stations

Our vision is a better railway for a

better Britain

Our vision is a better railway for a better Britain.

This means delivering a railway that is safer, more

reliable and more efficient than ever before, and that
will help to build a thriving, sustainable economy.

Our focus on safety

At Network Rail we believe that outstanding business performance and outstanding safety
performance go hand in hand. Essential to our vision is a culture in which everyone
working on the railway makes safety their number one priority every day.

IP South East Induction Booklet 28 July 2016

Network Rail Infrastructure Projects - Strictly Private and Confidential Page 13
The challenges
We know that fulfilling our vision will not be easy.

Each year:

 Nearly 1.7 billion passenger journeys are made – more than twice as many as in
1995.

 A million more trains run than just ten years

ago.

 More than 100m tonnes of freight are

transported by rail between Britain’s ports,
factories and warehouses.

 More people use the railway than at any point since the 1920s – when the network
was almost twice its current size.

 This ever-increasing demand means that at peak times there is no space left on the
busiest parts of the network, which leads to congestion and delays.

Fulfilling our vision

Our rail network is the fastest growing and safest in Europe.

But… there is still some way to go to create a railway fit for 21st century Britain.

We are investing more than £25bn in developing our infrastructure between 2014 and
2019, so that we can deliver more services and better journeys.

IP South East Induction Booklet 28 July 2016

Network Rail Infrastructure Projects - Strictly Private and Confidential Page 14
This is the largest programme of sustained investment in the railway that Britain has ever
seen. It involves a wide range of improvements, from lengthening platforms and
redesigning track layouts to introducing electrification and building world-class stations.

We are also exploring and defining ways in which we can harness the power of digital
technology to help increase the network’s capacity in the longer-term future.

Changing our behaviour is the only way we can become the high-performing, commercial
organisation that Britain needs.

You will have your own ideas of what changing these key behaviours - being customer-
driven, accountable, challenging and collaborative - mean to you and to your part of the
business; the following list is not exhaustive:

3.4.1 We report periodically against performance measures set at the start of the
financial year on the below scorecard. Below is an example of last year’s results
for Network Rail.

IP South East Induction Booklet 28 July 2016

Network Rail Infrastructure Projects - Strictly Private and Confidential Page 17
We are one of the largest projects delivery businesses in the country. Between 2014 and
2019 more than £4bn will be invested per year to replace and improve the railway.

In April 2012 we created a new, regionally based projects delivery structure with four
regions, a focus on signalling & track, and separate programme streams for major projects
to deliver major renewal and enhancement infrastructure in each area.

Our focus is to renew and enhance the rail infrastructure and to deliver our commitments
for the future with increased efficiency and value for money through effective planning of
activities and resources.

Our Objectives
• Market competitive
• A sustainable business; by sustainable we mean
self-supporting, affordable and attractive in the
market place

Our Strategic Aims

• We will focus on delivery for Network Rail
• We will drive efficiency and effectiveness
• We will create new income streams

IP South East Induction Booklet 28 July 2016

Network Rail Infrastructure Projects - Strictly Private and Confidential Page 18
 Support Network Development in GRIP 1-3, including the provision of resources

 Detailed design and development of the single best option identified by Network
Development that can be delivered on budget and on time

 Access and planning of work banks in advance to ensure timely delivery and minimal
disruption to our customers

 Provision of project management and commercial services, systems and processes

Our capabilities define the areas of our business that make us an effective deliverer.
These capabilities provide a focus for our business strategy and help inform future
improvement initiatives.

“My ambition for Infrastructure Projects is to have a learning culture that encourages the
attraction, retention and promotion of our people in their chosen careers. We all face the
time pressures of day-to-day delivery and sometimes neglect our own personal
development.

My team and I are committed to ensuring that our people reach their full potential. I would
therefore encourage you to take some time to consider your own personal development
and to speak to your line manager about how you can continue to learn and grow. ”
