Handout 4

1. Ruby likes to study in groups and discuss materials with others. Sometimes she reads her notes out loud
because it helps her to hear them in her head while she is studying. In some classes, Ruby records her
lectures with the instructor’s permissions so that she can go back and listen to them later.
2. Johnathan finds it helpful to color-code his notes, which makes it possible for him to organize
information and internalize it better. He also creates diagrams while studying, finding that they help him
understand certain structures and ideas. Johnathan watches videos on relevant topics of his study as well,
finding them helpful for extra information.
3. Rya likes hands-on experience and activities in the lab as a means of getting her to understand certain
ideas and topics. Sometimes she reviews her materials while she is walking around. She also takes frequent
breaks and gets physically involved in outdoor activities to release energy that allows her to be more
focused on her return to studying.
4. Terrel takes substantial notes during class and reads over them often. When he expects to expand
knowledge relating to any module, he also reads and rereads any materials that his teachers assign in
class.
5. Anna finds it hard to stay focused on reading and jotting down notes from presentation slides in the
literature class. She prefers forming in-class listening centers where she could follow verbal instructions
from the instructor and listen to her peers discussing relevant ideas to arrive at and take away notable
learning outcomes. To memorize conceptual ideas of a literary movement and better interpret a literary
work, she likes acting in drama class sessions where she could play the literary characters and make sense
of their emotional development in the storylines.
