Teen’s sleep

Teenagers need 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night, but despite this statistic, almost 80% don’t get more
than six due to school starting early. Over time their physical and mental health deteriorates. The
lack of sleep can also affect their academic outcome and thus their future. The major debate is if
school should start later and I will discuss this topic in my essay.

Firstly, sleep deprivation can lead to numerous major repercussions for our mental and physical
health. One of which is depression and negative thoughts. They are capable of making teens stop
natural habits such as consistently eating three meals a day and personal hygiene. This can give rise
to other significant consequences. In addition to that, lack of sleep creates an imbalance in the
production of neurotransmitters. Its insufficiency can lead to several psychotic diseases. Not only
this, but sleeplessness can also weaken teens' immune systems, increase the risk of diabetes and
heart disease, and contribute to weight gain.

Secondly, lack of sleep can interfere with our academic studies. It can lead to a lack of
concentration in class, and thus give rise to worse performance at exams. Furthermore, as previously
mentioned, depression can also have major reverberations on our academics due to one of its major
characteristics being a lack of motivation. What’s more, sleep deprivation can result in. memory loss
at crucial moments in. teenage studies.

To sum up, everything stated so far, the consequences of lacking sleep are quite major and thus
schools should start at a later time because that they are the biggest reason why teenagers are sleep
deprived.
