UNDERGROUND
BULK
EMULSIONS
One of the company’s on-going success stories
is its Underground Bulk Systems. While
widely accepted as the industry standard for
underground mining, it is continuously evolving
by introducing new emulsion formulations and
pumping/delivery systems.
UNDERGROUND BULK EMULSIONS

General Specifications of
Underground Bulk Emulsions

CLASSIFICATION − Improved logistics (classified as non-explosive)

Underground Bulk Emulsion explosives consist of a − Easier adherence to explosives legislation

base emulsion and sensitiser, which are classified
as non-detonable and non-explosive, respectively. − Improved Fragmentation compared to ANFO

APPEARANCE Features
− Non-explosive classification
The base emulsion is a honey coloured mixture of two
liquids and an emulsifier, immiscible under normal − High strength
sensitising, that is mixed through an homogeniser/static
mixer. The sensitiser is an aqueous or emulsified liquid, − High VOD
which, when added to the base emulsion and mixed/
sheared, creates an explosive in the blast-hole. − Water resistant

BENEFITS AND FEATURES − Low fume characteristics

Benefits compared to conventional explosives

− Improved safety

− Ease of use

− Less labour intensive than conventional cartridge

explosives (non-detonable)

PACKAGED
EXPLOSIVES
Through its strategically placed network
of regional depots, AEL is able to provide
a full range of explosives and services
to the most remote customers in African
and International markets. This includes
a wide range of specifically formulated
Emulsions, Watergels, Drygels, Anfex
and Non-detonating solutions.

As with all AEL products, these solutions are supported

by a reliable range of initiation systems and blasting
services, as well as skilled technical support staff
who are on hand to manage customer needs.
PACKAGED EXPLOSIVES

Magnum® Watergels and Drygels

The Magnum® range of watergel explosives

have become an industry standard and are
known for their reliability, high energy and
excellent blasting results.

The product range consists of the classic

watergel configurations as well as the dry
gel configurations (high loading of ammonium
nitrate prill). The dry gel explosives are
characterized by a stiffer rheology for improved
handling in long cartridges. Both types are
offered in different energy grades to suit the
blasting requirements or application.

It is known that, following local ignition in water-based

combustion to propagate. The latter is usually referred
to as the ‘Minimum Burning Pressure’ (MBP). The MBP
is a very important and useful safety parameter as, if Thermal Stability Test

The Central Analytical Services laboratory took over the
responsibility for the analytical services for AEL in January
2014. The laboratory has its roots in R&D but was expanded
significantly in 2013 to enable it to render this service to
AEL. The laboratory is responsible for the testing of all raw
materials, used within the operations, to ensure that they
conform to the raw material specifications.

Various in-process samples and all final products are also

analysed to ensure that the quality of the products produced
within AEL are maintained or improved. The laboratory
is furthermore responsible for the analysis of all effluent
samples to ensure that AEL complies with legislative
environmental requirements. Approximately 2000 samples
are analysed on a monthly basis by the laboratory.

of either the prill tanker, the emulsion tanker or

Application
Used for charging bulk emulsion in underground narrow
reef and shaft sinking environments. The focus area
for the PCU’s is narrow reef stoping. However, the
pumps can also be used in standard development up to
four metres in height and width. The pumps are generally
used in conjunction with bagged emulsion, however, the
source of the emulsion can be bulk or bagged.

The shaft sinking unit consists of multiple portable

pumps mounted under a 2 ton emulsion tank. The unit is
lowered below the kibble and is placed at shaft
bottom during charging.

SAFETY FEATURES

− Bursting disc

− Pump will stall under high pressure conditions

* Bagged emulsion product used in conjunction with the Portable
− Components contained within sealed lid Charging Unit (PCU)

Vertical Drop System

A ‘Vertical Drop’ emulsion reticulation system

has been developed by AEL to enable emulsion
and sensitiser to be delivered through piping to
underground storage facilities adjacent to the
workings.

AEL have recently partnered with ELB Engineering

Services to provide a full turnkey solution for a vertical
drop installation for its customers.

BENEFITS & FEATURES

Benefits
An underground bulk emulsion delivery system offers:

− Significant safety enhancement by reducing logistic

flow in main arteries to the mine

− Seamless inventory control

− High level of security and control of products used

to manufacture explosives

− Reduced interface with explosives which is

manufactured at the working face during charging

− Reduced risk of explosives theft due to the streamlined

delivery channel

− Significant increase in the lifecycle of assets used

for charging

− Significant saving in maintenance, fuel and asset

wear on assets used for charging

− Reduction in time and labour resources

− Reduced infrastructure requirement on surface

− Bulk emulsion deliveries at any time

Features
− Surface delivery point for the transfer of bulk
emulsion and sensitiser

− Reticulation piping of suitable diameter to ensure

adequate flow-rate at the outlet

− Underground storage tanks

− Control of emulsion mass at delivery and point of use
