Grade 7 Final Science Exam Study Tips

Unit 3: The Circulatory System

 Know the function of the heart and the three main types of blood vessels
 Identify when the heart is contracting or relaxing
 Know the two circuits of the human circulatory system and the direction of blood flow to and
from the heart
 Know the difference between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
 Know the name, function, and appearance of the four main components of blood

Unit 4: Respiration

 Know the names, appearance, and function of all the organs of the respiratory system
 Know the word equation for aerobic respiration
 Understand that respiration is a chemical reaction that only occurs living cells. It releases
useable energy from food molecules by using oxygen.

Unit 5: Reproduction and Development

 Know the definition of fertilisation, gametes, zygotes, and embryos

 Know the physical changes that take place to boys and girls during adolescence
 Know the names, appearance, and function of the organs of the male and female reproductive
system
 Know what happens to egg cells that are fertilised, and what happens when an egg cell isn’t
fertilised

Unit 7: Elements and Compounds

 Know the names and chemical symbols for the first 20 elements of the periodic table
 Know which elements are metals and which are non-metals, and the general properties of each
 Know the state of matter that the first 20 elements exist in, at room temperature on Earth
 Know how to identify and name mixtures, elements, compounds, and molecules

Unit 8: Mixtures

 Know the definition of soluble, insoluble, solvent, solute, dissolve, solution, concentrated
solution, dilute solution, and saturated solution
 Understand which a separation technique can be used in a particular situation; filtration
distillation, evaporation, chromatography

Unit 9: Material Changes

 Know the difference between physical and chemical changes

 Understand that burning is a chemical reaction between a fuel and oxygen in the air.
 Be able to write a word equation for burning, rusting, an acid reacting with a metal, and an acid
reacting with a carbonate
 Understand the law of conservation of mass in relation to chemical reactions and the masses of
their reactants and products
 Know the environmental conditions that promote rusting of iron, and what methods we could
use to slow or stop rusting from happening
Unit 11: Sound

 Know the properties of sound waves; amplitude, loudness, frequency, pitch, crests, and troughs
 Know that sound waves only travel through a medium such as a gas, liquid, or solid
 Understand that we refer to the regions of a sound wave where particles are close together as
compressions, and regions where particles are further apart as rarefactions
 Know how to interpret sound wave traces according to amplitude/loudness and frequency/pitch

Unit 12: Light

 Know that different colours of light have different frequencies, and that white light is a mixture
of all frequencies of visible light
 Know the law of reflection: i=r
 Be able to identify the incident ray, normal line, reflected ray, refracted ray, angle of incidence,
and angle of reflection
 Know which colours we see when we mix pure blue light with pure green light and pure red light
