HANDLING CHEMICALS Prepared by Ashar Al Rabie
Approved by Dr. Ayman Al Jaru
1.Purpose and Scope:
1.1 The proper chemical labeling provides the employee with the information required to recognize hazards
in the workplace.
1.2 To protect the employee themselves and others from the chemical’s hazards.

2.Policy Statement:
2.1 All chemicals in Dar Al Hikmah Medical Laboratory (DHML) must be labeled in compliance with WHMIS
regulations with a laboratory label.

3.Definitions:
3.1 WHMIS: The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canadian legislation
covering the use of hazardous materials in the workplace. This includes assessment, signage, labeling,
material safety data sheets and worker training. WHMIS closely parallels the U.S. OSHA Hazard
Communication Standard.
3.2 NFPA: The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a private non-profit organization, is the leading
authoritative source of technical background, data, and consumer advice on fire protection, problems
and prevention. The primary goal of NFPA is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards
on the quality of life by providing and advocating scientifically based consensus codes and standards,
research, training, and education. At first glance, the HMIS and NFPA labeling systems appear quite
similar. Both have four sections colored blue, red, yellow and white. HMIS uses colored bars, while NFPA
uses colored diamonds. HMIS attempts to convey full health warning information to all employees while
NFPA is meant primarily for fire fighters and other emergency responders.
3.3 CHIP: The Chemical Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply (CHIP) Regulations provide information
on hazardous chemicals in Great Britain. These regulations are designed to comply with various
European Union (EU) directives relating to the supply of dangerous chemicals. CHIP has been amended
on a regular basis since it was first adopted as the Chemicals Hazard Information and Packaging for
Supply Regulations in 1994. Therefore, one may see references to CHIP 96, 98, 99 etc. The latest version
of CHIP revoked all previous versions, so rely only on the latest version of CHIP (currently 2002) when
planning your regulatory compliance.
3.4 HMIS: The Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS), was developed by the National Paint &
Coatings Association (NPCA) to help employers comply with OSHA's Hazard Communication (HCS), 29
CFR 1910.1200. The system utilizes colored bars, numbers and symbols to convey the hazards of
chemicals used in the workplace.

4.Procedure and Responsibility:
