The Effect of Indoctrination in Nazi Germany at the drama

"Dark Road"

The drama "Dark Road" reveals how strong the doctrines of Nazi Germany were when led by
Hitler. We can see this in the character Greta (main character) who has chosen the wrong
path in life to embrace the ideology of Nazism and causes conflict with her sister. Greta
becomes a cruel camp guard, then she wants recognition for her identity in her society.
Greta's desire for recognition in her environment can be seen on page 12 :

GRETA. I'd wear a uniform. I'd be somebody.

LISE. You're somebody to me!
DAIMLER. Being important mattered to you?
GRETA. (To DAIMLER:) Our parents were dead. We had no one. We needed money.
I wanted to belong. I wanted respect.
From this quote, it can be seen that Greta and her sister are looked down upon by their
society. They’re often treated badly because their parents are gone. They had a difficult life
for a long time, so Greta wants to change her fate by becoming a camp guard. But, her choice
made her got Nazi Germany's doctrine and and led her astray on the road she chose.
Greta who was affected by the doctrine can be seen on page 13 :

COMMANDANT. Don't be ashamed. Do you see the dark-haired woman just there?
(He points.) A Jewess. She owned the most expensive dress shop in Düsseldorf. Could
you have shopped there? GRETA. No.
COMMANDANT. Nor I. Only the richest Jews. But look at her now. How the mighty
have fallen, yes? GRETA. Yes.
COMMANDANT. And if that woman jostled you in the street, in her expensive fur
coat? What would you do? GRETA. I would...
COMMANDANT.(Mockingly) "Move out of my way, ragged girl!" GRETA. I'd... I'd...
COMMANDANT. "Move, little peasant!" GRETA. I would shove her down!
COMMANDANT. Very good! Very good indeed. (Slaps GRETA on the back.) You
see, these women are a pox on the Reich-criminals, those who question the Fuhrer,
communists. Jews. Gypsies. You have to watch these pigs and punish them if they step
out of line. They would not spare you. You must not spare them! Understand?
The quote explains that the commander poisoned Greta's mind to hate Jews and triggered her
to treat Jews badly. Greta, who was a kind and gentle woman like her sister, suddenly turned
into a cruel figure. And another doctrinization of Greta can be seen on page 14:

COMMANDANT. You must be fierce!

DAIMLER. And were you fierce?
GRETA. At first, I was weak. But I learned. I learned.
DAIMLER. Tell me, how did you learn?
GRETA. In the same way water wears away rock.
It was clear that Greta was affected by her commander's words. Greta admits that she has
been cruel with what she has done all this time. She considered his duty to exterminate the
German’s vermin (Jews) with cruelty. he peak of Greta's cruelty can be seen on page 25 :

DAIMLER. Let's talk about your other duties. You were responsible for ending the
lives of...
COMMANDANT & DAIMLER. The children.
GRETA. I won't talk about that.
COMMANDANT. Let's talk about the children.
GRETA. I won't.
DAIMLER. You seem bothered now. Why now? Nothing seemed to bother you until
this moment.
COMMANDANT. Let's talk about the children. GRETA. Can we please...
DAIMLER. I think it's important.
COMMANDANT. (Overlapping "important":) Important duties for you.
DAIMLER. Not just children, though, correct? Also the infirm...
COMMANDANT. Infirm-the sickest, you know, and the very frail elderly...
COMMANDANT & GRETA. They have no place in the camp.
COMMANDANT. They have no place here.
COMMANDANT & DAIMLER. Isn't that right? Your duties
DAIMLER. Were to end the lives of the very sick and the unwanted infants?
COMMANDANT. A simple injection, which you will administer.
COMMANDANT & GRETA. It's for the best.
These quotes show the greatest cruelty Greta committed at the camp. Not only did she torture
prisoners, but she also murdered babies, the sick, and the elderly people. Because of that, in
the beginning of this drama, Greta is insulted and labeled as a Baby killer!
Greta's cruelty also creates conflict in her sibling relationships. Greta is fed up with Lise's
humane attitude and defense of the Jewish people. The conflict between Greta and Lise can
be seen on page 28 :

GRETA. Hitler is ridding this country of the vermin! He's making

Germany strong!
LISE. You're a fool!
(GRETA slaps her.)
That's right. Hurt me like you hurt them. It's all you know how to do now.
GRETA. You'll keep your mouth shut in public, if you know what's good for you.
LISE. Why? Will they throw me in a camp or just hang me for disagreeing? I know
what happens when one questions the mighty Reich! And now you serve them, beating
people, hurting them. You're disgusting.
GRETA. (Grabs her by the throat:) You think hurting people is the worst I've done?
Do you? You're the fool.
(Shoves LISE away.)
LISE. (In shock:) Who are you? Who are you? You've lost your way. You're lost.
Completely. Completely.
Greta starting to dare to hurt her sister is the beginning of the end on her chosen path. Greta
prefers to serve her work & country, so she’s reckless to let her sister go to prison and be
sentenced to death. The end of Lise's life is in Greta's own hands. The death of her own sister
is the peak of conflict between them, and this is the End of the cruelty committed by Greta.
This can be seen on page 32 :

GRETA. (After a pause:) No. I can't help her. She's a social deviant and an agitator.
She sickens me.
LISE. You're all devils! (To GRETA:) And you are the worst devil here!
COMMANDANT. (To MARGA:) We can't allow a traitor to walk free. Take her and
have her processed.
LISE. No. Greta!
(MARGA grabs her and pushes her.) Greta!
(LISE lunges and grabs GRETA's sleeve. GRETA roughly remotes LISE's hand.)
GRETA. (Evenly:) You've made your bed. Now lie in it.
LISE. (Screaming:) Don't let them have me! Greta!
(She is dragged off by MARGA and the COMMANDANT.) GRETA!
(After they are out of sight, GRETA reaches out very slightly in that direction.)
GRETA. (After a pause, to DAIMLER:) There. Now the story is ended.
Greta is the person who led her sister to her death. She did this without feeling guilty and she
considered this action to be a form of service to his country. She labelled Lise as a traitor to
Reich, because she was humane and wanted peace in country. Meanwhile, Greta serves the
cruel leader of her country and carries out oppression & murder against weak humans. Proof
of Greta's devotion to her country can be proven on pages 33 & 34:

DAIMLER. You sent your own sister to her death.

GRETA. I told you. I gave everything to the Reich.
DAIMLER. Your own sister.
GRETA. And I'd do it again. There is no room for the weak.
DAIMLER. Hitler said there was no truth, only victory. Tell me, is there victory for
you, even in her death?
GRETA. (After a beat, staring hard at DAIMLER:) Yes.
DAIMLER. (Leans on table in front of GRETA, staring at her, then, bitterly:) Heil
Hitler.
34 :
GRETA. So you want to gloat? To tell me how wrong I was? I won't believe you.
(Laughs.) You should have died in Auschwitz.
DAIMLER. (Laughs softly, after a moment:) There was beauty in it for you, wasn't
there? It was a hideous kind of art to you. You drew it all in blood, every twisted thing
you did. Evil in effigy. Every human being you tormented, you beat, you murdered,
Power over all, power like a sickness.
GRETA. I did it to empower Germany.
DAIMLER. No. To empower you.
Greta's loyalty and devotion to her country was very great, even on the day she was about to
be executed, she remained firm in her beliefs for Germany. He thought that the cruelty he had
committed so far was a form of strengthening his country. Greta's demonic nature has been
the result of her initial decision to choose a road that was dark and full of cruelty. Cruelty
takes away something valuable in our lives. We can find out about this on page 34 :

DAIMLER. I know this: your sister watched as they took you, day by day, hour by
hour. And you went. You chose. They showed you that dark road, and you went
down it willingly. Evil isn't something that swallows you up. It's a choice you make,
every day. Every time you see someone as less, as no longer human, as no longer
worthy of dignity, of life. Evil becomes ordinary. It becomes routine. If you aren't
careful, if you don't look it in the face every day, evil slips up beside you, puts its arm
around you. It makes you a friend.
(GRETA takes a deep breath, looks at her hands.)
GRETA. (After a slight pause:) A friend? I was more than its friend. I was its
confidante. Its servant. Its sister.
DAIMLER. That necklace. It's the one. The one you took. Marian's necklace.
GRETA. (Touching the necklace:) Yes.
DAIMLER. (Slight shake of head:) Goodbye, Greta. And if there is a God in heaven,
may He have mercy on your soul.
Daimler concluded that the cruelty that Greta committed was not something that was formed
because of society. But, that’s her decision. She still chose to enter the road even though
he knew that the road was dark and he would get lost in it. Evil takes everything. And
Marian's necklace being taken is a representation of losing something valuable in our lives
due to crimes committed, just like Greta who lost her sister due to her own cruelty.

At the end of the story, Greta conveys her idea that every human being has black and white.
There is darkness in every corner of this world. And every decision has consequences that we
have to bear, this can be seen on the last page:

(GRETA makes grand ceremony of removing her necklace, looking at it briefly, and
then handing it to the GUARD. She straightens her dress and touches her hair.)
As you look at me, will you also look at yourselves? With every light, there is a
shadow. I am yours. In the darkest corners of your heart, I am there. Wicked and
righteous, friend and fiend, sister and savage: I am you, and you are me. We all have
night inside us. Remember this. Remember me.
Greta shows how a good human being becomes a heartless monster because of the decisions
she makes. She continues to choose cruelty even though he sister has repeatedly warned her,
causing her to become accustomed to this cruelty and forgetting the thing she should protect,
her sister. Every human being has the potential to be like Greta, therefore we must pay
attention to each of our decisions and think about them carefully so that we are always on the
right path.
