1. Jose P. Rizal

Biography:

On June 19, 1861, Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal was born in Calamba, Laguna. He was
Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonso's second son, and the seventh of eleven children.
José Rizal (June 19, 1861-December 30, 1896) was a Filipino national hero known for his
intellectual prowess and artistic brilliance. He excelled at anything he set his mind to,
including medicine, poetry, sketching, architecture, sociology, and more. Despite insufficient
evidence, he was martyred by Spanish colonial authorities at the age of 35 on grounds of
conspiracy, sedition, and insurrection.

Contributions to our country’s history:

Jose Rizal is well known for his writings and work throughout the Philippines during
the Spanish colonial period. His works, which fought for political changes and social
improvement in the Philippines, are among Rizal's most noteworthy achievements. "Noli Me
Tangere" (Touch Me Not) and "El Filibusterismo" (The Reign of Greed) were his novels that
revealed the excesses and injustices performed by the Spanish colonial administration and
clergy. These works sparked national consciousness and instilled in Filipinos a sense of
identity and pride.
2. Gregorio F. Zaide

Biography:

Gregorio Fernandez Zaide (May 25, 1907 – October 31, 1986) was a Filipino
historian, author, and politician from Pagsanjan, Laguna. Zaide, a multi-award-winning
author who wrote 67 books and over 500 articles about history, is known as the "Dean of
Filipino Historiographers. He was a founding member of the International Association of
Historians of Asia (IAHA) and served as president of the Philippine Historical Association
for three terms. He was the mayor of his hometown of Pagsanjan from 1971 to 1975 as a
politician.

Contributions to our country’s history:

Dr. Zaide, a legendary historian of Philippine history, has made significant


contributions. He was a hardworking scholar who wrote 67 books, some of which were used
as history textbooks in secondary schools and colleges across the country. He has also
published over 500 historical articles in local and international magazines.

Dr. Zaide received the Diploma of Outstanding Writings on Filipino National Heroes, the
Republic Cultural Heritage award in 1968 for his outstanding contribution to historical
writing, the Distinguished Public Service award, a Special Prize in History in the 1940
Commonwealth Literary Contest, and the Diploma of Distinction for valuable research on Dr.
Jose Rizal's life and works, to name a few.
3. Teodoro Agoncillo

Biography:

Teodoro Agoncillo (November 9, 1912 – January 14, 1985) was a leading Filipino
historian of the 20th century.Born in Lemery, Batangas, Agoncillio obtained a bachelor's
degree in philosophy from the University of the Philippines in 1934 and a master's degree in
the arts from the same university the following year. He and his colleague Renato
Constantino were among the first Filipino historians to gain recognition for advocating a
distinctly nationalist perspective on Filipino history (nationalist historiography). He was also
a poet and an essayist.

Contributions to our country’s history:

Agoncillo authored numerous books and studies on Philippine history. Among his
most famous works are History of the Filipino People, The Crisis of the Republic, The Revolt
of the Masses, The Story of Bonifacio and the Katipunan, Ang Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas, and
the Malolos, Philippine History (adopted as official textbook in Philippine History). In 1956,
he published his seminal work, Revolt of the Masses: The Story of Bonifacio and the
Katipunan, a history of the 1896 Katipunan-led revolt against Spanish rule and its leader,
Andres Bonifacio.
