Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7:

Affordable and Clean Energy

What is SDG 7?
SDG 7 is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations
in 2015. It aims to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and
modern energy services by 2030.
Why is SDG 7 important?
SDG 7 is important because energy is essential for all aspects of human development.
It is needed for lighting, cooking, heating, cooling, transportation, and powering our
economies. Access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy is also critical for
addressing climate change and other environmental challenges.
Progress on SDG 7:
Challenges to achieving SDG 7

● The high cost of renewable energy technologies

● The need to invest in energy infrastructure in developing countries
● The lack of political will to transition to a clean energy economy
What can be done to achieve SDG 7?

● Investing in renewable energy technologies

● Supporting energy efficiency measures
● Promoting access to energy services for the poor and marginalized
● Providing financial support to developing countries
Specific actions and policies made by India on SDG 7
● Electrification: India has achieved 100% village electrification and has provided electricity
connections to over 280 million rural households.
● Renewable energy: India has set a target to install 450 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The country has already installed over 160 GW of renewable energy capacity, including solar, wind,
and hydropower.
● Energy efficiency: India has implemented a number of energy efficiency measures, such as the
Perform, Achieve, and Trade (PAT) scheme and the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC).
● Access to energy services: The government has launched a number of programs to provide access
to energy services for the poor and marginalized, such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
(PMUY), which provides free LPG connections to poor households.
In addition to these, India has also made a number of other commitments to achieving
SDG 7, including:

● Increasing the share of renewable energy in the country's energy mix to 40% by
2030.
● Reducing energy intensity by 33-35% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.
● Providing access to clean cooking facilities to all households by 2030.
Conclusion

SDG 7 is essential for achieving sustainable development. By working together,

we can ensure that everyone has access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and
modern energy services by 2030.
