WATCHKEEPING & SECURITY IN PORT
THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT :

1. Observe international, national and local rules and regulations 


2. Verify accommodation ladder / gangway watch .
- In station and alert 
- Watchman is furnished with portable radio and means for raising alarm. 

3. Check and adjust as necessary the mooring lines and anchor cable chain if used. 
- Verify that rat guards are in position 

4. Ensure that all safety, fire and pollution prevention regulations are maintained. 

5. Ensure that all security procedures are maintained at port security level
- Visitors control operative and adequate for present port security level . 
- Visitors and joining crew luggage is being controlled . 
- Restricted areas are monitored for intruders . 
- Duty officer and rowing watchman alert for activities on board, ashore and at sea side . 
- Cargo operations are supervised . 
- Bunkering operations are supervised . 
- Stores are checked against requisition and verified ashore before loading . 

5. Be informed about:
- Full details of planned cargo operation 
- Stress and stability conditions during cargo handling 
- Ballasting operation in progress 
- State and availability of main engine 
- Current or planned bunkering operation 
- Any other current or planned operations 
- Any shore personnel on board and their location 

6. Be aware of :
- Port security level and port security measures
- Weather prediction 
- Tides prediction 
- Flags and signals hoisted 
7. Keep under control :
- Cranes operations 
- Opening and closing of hatches 
- Cargo handling and eventual stevedoring damages to the vessel or cargo 
- Draft, trim and list of the vessel and eventual air draft. 
- Air pollution – notify engine room in case of smoke emission 
- Oil pollution – visually check hydraulic systems and around vessel to ensure no pollution
hazard exists 

8. Keep record and enter all facts into deck log book. 

Note: This check list should be used for verifications during the port watch. The watch officer after
verifications
ticks the check list in the Record of Checklist Verification form. Any observed breach of security or
deficiency must be reported to Chief Mate / Security Officer immediately..
