ME 314: Assignment 1 : 2023

Problem 1.
Figure shows an electric fan supported by mountings at A and B. The motor delivers a torque
of 2 N•m to the fan blades. They, in turn, push the air forward with a force of 20 N. Neglecting
gravity forces, determine all loads acting on the fan (complete assembly). Sketch it as a free
body in equilibrium. We shall later use the forces at A and B to design the threaded fasteners at
A and B.

Problem 2.
Figure represents a bicycle with an 800-N rider applying full weight to one pedal. Treat this as
a two-dimensional problem, with all components in the plane of the paper. Draw as free bodies
in equilibrium and determine the force on the chain. We shall later use the forces on the chain
to design the chain.

Problem 3.
Figure shows a mixer supported by symmetric mountings at A and B. Select a motor torque
between 20 N•m and 50 N•m for driving the mixing paddles and then determine all loads
acting on the mixer. Sketch the free body in equilibrium We shall later use the forces at A and
B to design the threaded fasteners at A and B.

Problem 1.
A rectangular plate, 15 mm thick, made of a brittle material is shown
in Fig. Calculate the stresses at each of three holes of 3, 5 and 10 mm
diameter.

Problem 2.
A flat plate subjected to a tensile force of 5 kN is shown in Fig. The plate
material is grey cast iron FG 200 and the factor of safety is 2.5. Determine
the thickness of the plate.

Problem 3.
A round shaft made of a brittle material and subjected to a bending moment of
15 N-m is shown in Fig. The stress concentration factor at the fillet is 1.5 and
the ultimate tensile strength of the shaft material is 200 N/mm2. Determine the
diameter d, the magnitude of stress at the fillet and the factor of safety.

Problem 4.
A shaft carrying a load of 5 kN midway between two bearings is shown in Fig.
Determine the maximum bending stress at the fillet section. Assume the shaft
material to be brittle.

Problem 5.
Find the maximum value of stress at the hole and semicircular notch shown in
Figure.

Problem 6.
Referring to the Figure, what is the value of the maximum stress at both the hole
and the notch?

Problem 7.
A shaft is supported by bearings at locations A and B and is loaded with a
downward 1000-N force as shown in Figure. Find the maximum stress at the shaft
fillet. The critical shaft fillet is 70 mm from B.
