What made the moment: Liverpool didn't question everything
seem to have much of a chance heading
into the second leg of the Champions
League semifinal against Barcelona. After
losing the first leg at Barca 3-0, the Reds
needed a 4-0 victory to sneak into the final.
Still, manager Jurgen Klopp instructed his
players to play with everything they had,
to "fail in the most beautiful way" even if
winning felt out of grasp.
They would do better than that. Thanks
to a pair of goals each from Georginio
Wijnaldum and Divock Origi, Liverpool
pulled off the stunning comeback and
would go on to defeat Tottenham in the
final to lift the Champions League trophy
for the first time since 2005.

U.S. National Park:

T he words “For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People” stretch across the
northern entrance of our nation’s first national park, Yellowstone.
According to the Department of Interior, the goal of the National Park Service
is, and has always been, to keep our wild places protected and unimpaired for
future generations. To that end, more than 400 areas and 84 million acres span-
ning all 50 states and several unincorporated territories of the United States,
protect America’s greatest natural treasures. With 61 of those wilderness areas
toting National Park designation, it can be tricky trying to pick which park to
visit.
So, to help you determine which parks should be higher on your bucket list,
we ranked each park based on their overall accessibility, facilities and accom-
modations, trails and attractions, crowds, and, of course, overall ‘wow’ factor,
which we measured by photo ops and stunning scenery.
Keep in mind, it’s almost impossible to say that one is better than the next —
there’s truly something special about each one of our national parks.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

COLORADO
Where else in the world can you hike craggy alpine peaks and the tallest
dunes in North America all in the same day? Great Sand Dunes offers some
of the most diverse hiking terrain on this list. Visitors can trek to alpine lakes
and peaks, like the 13,29-foot Mount Herard, or explore desert dunes, like
the 750-foot Star Dune or the aptly-named 699-foot High Dune.
Even if each member of the family has a different hobby, chances are Great
Sand Dunes checks the box. Off-roading, sandboarding, fishing, stargazing,
hiking and even horseback riding are all available in the park. Great Sand
Dunes doesn’t really experience a lot of overcrowding, partly due to the sur-
face temperature of the dunes. Even on a modest 80-degree day, the dunes
can reach 150 degrees, making them impossible to appreciate during the day.
There is also only a single campground and a seasonal restaurant, so not
much in the way of accommodations. But if you bring your own food and
camp out under the stars, there’s plenty to appreciate in Great Sand Dunes
National Park.

Steve McQueen's Mug Shot, 1972
The Local News, September 15, 2023 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

Steve McQueen was known to live his life on the edge, but sometimes
he pushed it too far -- June 22, 1972 was one of those times. On that date,
McQueen was arrested in Anchorage, Alaska, for driving while intoxicated
and speeding. He was 42 years old.
Source: Reddit
We don't know why McQueen was in Alaska at the time, but an eyewit-
ness account has surfaced on the internet that explains the actor was busted
doing doughnuts (or "turning brodies") in an Oldsmobile Toronado. The
witness said:
My recollection is that McQueen was roaring up and down 4th Avenue
at very high speed and turning brodies -- drunker than hell. It was not just
a time or two -- he really raised hell for quite a while. When they did finally
get him stopped they administered a field sobriety test, and he somersaulted
down the white line. Once they got him arrested it was a pretty good time
-- sort of an autograph party in handcuffs.
While McQueen has often been held up as one of the all-time coolest cats
in Hollywood, his antics and mischievous grin in the mugshot aren't cool.
These days, we consider drunk driving a serious issue, and with good rea-

the drink remains as relevant today as it was when it
first captured drinkers’ hearts 200 years ago. Make a Classic Bourbon
If you’re a history buff, you could draw a straight line
connecting this drink to the first recorded definition of Old Fashioned
the cocktail category in general (circa 1806), which
called for spirits, sugar, water and bitters. The Old Fash-
ioned hits all those marks, with whiskey, sugar, water
and aromatic bitters. You could also skip the history
lesson and simply make the drink. Do the latter if
you’re already thirsty.
Start by using good bourbon, the rule being that if
you wouldn’t sip it by itself it has no place at the helm
of a Bourbon Old Fashioned. (There are other whiskey
drinks for masking subpar booze—this isn’t one of
them.) From there, the cocktail-minded seem to break
into two camps: simple syrup or muddled sugar.
While a barspoon of syrup can cut your prep time in
half, it robs the drink of some of the weight and texture
that provides its deep appeal. If you want to make the
drink like they did back in the 19th century, granulated
sugar or a sugar cube is the way to go. If you want to
make the cocktail with more of a modern twist, opt for
simple syrup. (Although what’s the big rush? The
Bourbon Old Fashioned isn’t going anywhere.) Just
know that simple syrup adds a bit more water to your
drink, so you may need to adjust your ice and stirring
accordingly.
Once you’ve mastered the Bourbon Old Fashioned,
you can also try making the cocktail with rye whiskey,
which results in a slightly spicier drink. Or you can use
rum, brandy or any number of spirits—after all, the Old Fashioned is more bon-spiked version that drinkers have been coming back to for decades, so
of a template than an exact science. But there’s something about the bour- why mess with perfection?

Fill the mixing glass with ice, add the bourbon, and stir until well-chilled.
Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube.
Express the oil of an orange twist over the glass, then drop into the glass

Industry Must Mitigate EV Fire Danger — Now

Electric vehicles aren't more prone to catching fire than internal combustion engine vehicles,
but extinguishing those fires is exponentially more difficult.

T
he auto industry has already spent hundreds of billions of dollars research-
ing, developing and implementing its transition to battery-electric propul-
sion, but it needs to dedicate a bit more to mitigate a growing and stubborn
problem with its new products: fire.
It's not that EVs are more prone to catching fire than their internal combustion-
powered counterparts — they aren't. The problem is that, unlike the more common
fires in internal combustion vehicles, EV fires are exponentially hotter and more
difficult to extinguish. The industry has already seen the calamitous results when
EVs catch fire, as occurred last year in the Felicity Ace disaster. On land, these in-
cidents regularly tie up fire crews for hours as overheated battery cells continue to
reignite, even after being doused with tens of thousands of gallons of water and
seemingly ineffective firefighting foam.
In one instance last year, firefighters in Sacramento, Calif., eventually resorted
to submerging a burning Tesla Model S in a freshly dug pit filled with thousands
of gallons of water to finally extinguish the stubborn blaze and keep it from reig-
niting. It really should never take a tractor and an improvised pond to render a dan-
gerous vehicle inert.
This is where automakers, and especially their battery suppliers, need to step up.
Much more funding is needed to research safe, effective and efficient ways to ex-
tinguish battery fires in EVs, and then to spread the fruits of that research to fire- be done.

FAMOUS MURDERS
THAT REMAIN
UNSOLVED
By Thomm Quackenbush
Despite what television would have you believe, not every mur-
der is solved in under an hour. No matter how much effort police
put into the cases at the time and amateur sleuths do afterward,
some murders will never be solved.
That's not to say that all unsolved murders are created equal. For
some, almost everything about the case is unknown: the culprit,
the victim's identity, the method, the motive. On occasion, the best
the police can tell the public is that someone was definitely killed,
but anything after that is nebulous. With other cases, everyone
knows who did it, but they managed to get acquitted or gave the
police an alibi. In still others, the only reason that witnesses aren't
pointing fingers at the culprit is that these fingers will be immedi-
ately cut off — along with their heads.
However, for what little good it did for the victims, sometimes
being unable to solve a murder drives those left behind to improve
the world so that no one else has to suffer the same fate.

THE CHICAGO TYLENOL MURDERS: DO

NOT LIVE IF SEAL IS BROKEN

Shutterstock

The Chicago Tylenol murders changed your life if you've ever

fumbled with the cover reading, "Do not use if seal is broken." It
is a crime that one could picture the Joker doing, as there seem to
be few sensible motives.
The New York Times reports that, in 1982, someone refilled cap-
sules of Extra-Strength Tylenol with potassium cyanide. The first
to die was a 12-year-old named Mary Kellerman, and six more
died before Johnson & Johnson could issue a recall, the first ever
done. Copycats around the country caused more deaths in the
meantime. According to PBS, Johnson & Johnson lost over $100
million recalling around 31 million bottles but were applauded for
regaining the trust of a panicked public. To reassure consumers,
they changed their packaging, and other businesses followed suit.
There was never a motive, though a tax consultant, James W.
Lewis, sent a letter saying that he would "stop the killing" for $1
million. Though he was arrested and imprisoned for 12 years for
extortion, he was not the culprit. No one credible ever came for-
ward to claim that they had done this. ABC reported in 2011 that
the FBI did take DNA from Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, as he
was in the right place at the right time, and subverting a massive
company would fit his M.O. However, it was another dead end.

The IRA requires Medicare officials and pharmaceu-

that's not the right word: Companies that don't agree to
government-proposed prices will face excise taxes of
up to 95%. That's a shakedown, not a negotiation.
The government will announce the first 10 drugs sub-
ject to IRA price controls in September. Which means
we haven't even seen this arrangement's worst effects
yet. Nonetheless, some lawmakers already want to ex-

pand the existing provisions.

With their newly introduced bill, House Democrats
are following in the footsteps of their Senate counter-
parts, who earlier this year introduced the SMART

Prices Act, which would increase the number of drugs
subject to price controls. But the House bill also goes a
step farther, extending the controls beyond Medicare
purchases to medications covered under private insur-

costs. For example, the middlemen known as pharmacy
benefit managers (PBMs) make billions of dollars a year
by negotiating rebates from drug makers in exchange
for favorable treatment by insurance plans. This has had
the perverse effect of pressuring drug companies to raise
list prices in order to increase the size of rebates and
therefore PBM revenue. Americans would benefit from
legislation that targets these predatory practices.
But enacting more price controls -- before the first
ones have even taken effect -- would do far more harm
than good to American patients and the future of medi-
cine.

Fearless (2006)
This 2006 film was made with a budget of just $4.3 million, $1.3 million of which
went to star, Jet Li’s, salary. The film is directed by Ronnie Yu, and features Li as a master
martial artist, and co-founder of the Chin Woo Athletic Association in Shanghai, Huo
Yuanjia. The martial arts expert became a hero in China for defeating foreign fighters in
highly publicized competitions during a time when Chinese independence was under
threat by foreign imperialism.
Critics and audiences for the most part regard the film as a success, and it holds a 73%
MAKIN WAVES SALON approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The descendants of Huo Yuanjia weren’t happy
with the way it made their ancestors seem violent, however. In fact, they were so unhappy
that they decided to sue filmmakers.

teacher named Vince Papale, who realizes his lifelong dreams of becoming a professional
football player when he gets the chance to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. While Papale
never actually scored an NFL touchdown as the movie portrays, he was obviously good
enough that he impressed the Eagles coach.
Unfortunately, pro football aside, Papale leads a fairly average life, but sees himself
as a failure, as does his wife, who decides to leave him. Afterward, he scores a spot as
kicker on the Eagles, who proceed to lose the first six games of the preseason with their
new kicker. The film holds a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

J. Edgar (2011)
Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this 2011 biographical drama about J. Edgar Hoover, head

1919, and the film follows his rise to power and his troubled personal life. The real-life
Hoover was director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for 48 years and was
regarded as the architect of the FBI. The organization was initially a rather weak wing
of the federal government, but through his work, it became one of the strongest investi-

Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film also includes Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, Judi
