2. SERVEYING OF THE WORKS

2.1 GENERAL

This specification covers the site surveying works required for execution of constructing civil
infrastructures, including topographic and hydrographic surveys works, geotechnical
investigations, and other site conditions surveys.

2.2 MATERIALS: Not used

2.3 WORKMANSHIP

A. SITE CONDITIONS SURVEY

After commencement of the Work, the Contractor shall carry out the following site surveys as
prompt as possible and utilize the collected survey data for execution of the Works after
reporting the results to the Engineer.

 Investigation on sources of various materials

 Ground and geological conditions

 Access road condition

 Objects buried underground and obstacles (including hazardous explosives)

 Weather and atmospheric conditions

 Other site conditions

The Contractor shall also review the existing site survey & investigation data and the
construction methods prior to commencement of the Works. If any possible damage to local
residents living adjacent to the Site or problem related to execution of the Works, the
Contractor shall establish and implement countermeasures such as the followings.

 Measure for damages to the object buried underground, roadway, traffic facility
and etc.

 Measure for inconvenience to marine and ground traffic.

 Measure for noise, vibration, ash fall, dust and etc.

 Measure for hazardous explosives

B. TOPOGRAPHIC AND HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY

PREQUALIFICATION

Suitably qualified and experienced Surveyors (Land/Hydrographic) shall be used by the

Contractor for all survey work. Furthermore the contractor shall ensure that appropriate
instruments and methods are employed to achieve the necessary accuracies as required.

The Contractor or his appointed Sub-contractor, in the Engineer’s opinion, should be incapable
of carrying out such surveys, then the Engineer may instruct the Contractor to appoint a
suitable specialist to carry out these surveys, at no extra cost to the Client.

The Contractor shall check the existing coordinates, install the control reference bench mark for
the Works and shall receive the Engineer’s approval at completion of the installation.

The contractor shall be responsible to properly protect the reference bench mark from being
damaged, removed or relocated. When necessary for execution of the Work, the Contractor
may relocate the bench mark under instruction from the Engineer.

CHART DATUM LEVEL

Control reference bench marks are provided by client. However, the Contractor shall satisfy
himself as to the accuracy of these control reference marks prior to carrying out any survey
work, and shall report to the Engineer any discrepancies outside the normal acceptable
tolerances.

If it is necessary, the contractor shall install reference survey bench mark in the proximity of
the Site and mark the difference between the ground bench mark and tidal bench mark. To
protect this bench mark from being damaged or lost, the Contractor shall install this bench
mark on the ground of hard soil layer.

INITIAL SURVEY DATA, SETTING OUT AND LEVELING

Any survey control marks (planimetric control or vertical control) established by the Contractor
for setting out or leveling shall be of stable construction. The locations and designs of these
shall be submitted for the approval of the Engineer prior to any survey work.

The Contractor shall prepare and submit to the Engineer a location diagram of control makers
showing the general locations as well as schedule giving the following information.

 Station designation

 Plan co-ordination ( National Grid System)

 Level values ( to Chart Datum)

 Description

The location diagram and schedule shall be revised and updated by the Contractor as and when
required throughout the works to meet the needs of the works. The engineer shall be issued
with all revisions.

Prior to the commencement of the Works the Contractor and the Engineer shall survey and
agree all levels on which the measurements of the Work are to be made.

The Contractor will be required to check the accuracy of the levels of these points from time to
time against the control reference marks. As the Contract progresses, the Contractor’s attention
is drawn to the necessity to recheck bench marks due to the change in level due to settlement.

NOTIFICATION OF SETTING OUT

The Engineer shall be informed in writing 24 hours in advance of any setting out which is to be
done and shall be allowed a further 24 hours to check and satisfy himself that the setting out is

within acceptable tolerances. The contractor shall provide at his own expense all assistance
needed by the Engineer for checking levels, setting out points etc. The Engineer’s approval will
be given in writing.

PROTECTION OF SURVEY CONTROL MARKS AND SETTING OUT POINTS

The Contractor shall take all necessary precautions to protect, reference control marks and
setting out points.

SURVEYS

The Contractor shall carry out a topographic survey of the Works, and shall produce plans and
elevations and sections as necessary as mentioned therein. These surveys carried out for the
Work area shall include the existing topography and obstacles (buildings, electric poles and
etc.) and shall have ground levels shown on a 25m x 25m grid. Additional levels shall be taken
as directed where there are significant changes in level or gradient of for the purpose of
identifying ground features.

The Contractor shall record the results of the above surveys on drawings, which shall be
submitted in the same form and quantity as the as-built drawings. These drawings shall be
subject to verification and approval of the Engineer and, when approved, the original drawings
shall be signed by both the Contractor and the Engineer.

C. SOIL INVESTIGATION

The Contractor shall thoroughly review and study the existing ground investigation results, and
for any additional borehole tests required to confirm the stability of structure, the Contractor
shall carry out the tests under the Engineer’s inspection prior to commencement of the Work.
Cost required for such tests shall be included in the Contract Value.
