Heerden’s four tools for managing conflict, enabling them to apply these
tools to real life situations effectively.

Introduction
The class will start with an ice breaker activity called “2 truths and a
conflict”.
Each student will take a turn to share 2 true statements about 10 min
themselves and 1 conflict statement that they recently experienced.

The goal is for the class to identify which type of conflict is being
experienced by the learners.

The teacher will then introduce the
topic of conflict resolution.
The teacher will ask the learners to
give synonyms for the word
‘conflict’ and the word
‘resolution’.
The teacher will look at different
factors that cause conflict in
relationships.
The teacher will discuss the
positive and negative impacts of
conflicts.
Body
Learners will engage in a
discussion around what is meant 10 min
by ‘conflict’ and what is meant
by ‘resolution’ in order to form a
definition for themselves.
The learners will be asked to
give an example for each of the
different factors. 10 min
The learners will have a
discussion around whether they
think conflict is good or bad and 5 min
why.

Case study
The teacher will divide the class into groups of 4 and give each group
activity
a case study that is unique to that group.
The group will be asked to use the 4 tools they just learned to help 10 min
facilitate conflict resolution for their specific case study.
The learners will be asked to present their findings to the class in the
next lesson as part of a recap for the next topic which is problem
solving and decision making.
