● assess how power is exercised in different situations.

b. What is/are New

Politics always involves the exercise of power by one person to another

person or persons (Shively,2012). Power is the ability to get someone to do
something he/ she wants to accomplish, thus making things happen in the way
he/she wants. In having such ability, along the exercise of power is an influence.
Thus, influence is the process by which a person affects the behavior and feeling of
another person. In order to influence a person, there must an authority which is the
right to change another person. Power is as well a prime ingredient of politics.
(Roskin et.al,2012). However, there are instances that power becomes cynical,
brutal, and self-destructive that affirmed Lord Action’s dictum. “Power tends to
corrupt: absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Answer the following questions on your answer sheet.

1. Is power always positive? Negative? Both? Neither? Why do you say so?

2. From the given definitions, what is the main purpose of power?

What is Power?

● According to Robert Dahl, power (is) a type of relationship in respect of

capability and control. Take a very simple example. There are two men—A
and B. If A possesses the capability to control B then it will be assumed that A
has the power. So, power involves a successful attempt to do something
which he could not do otherwise.

● Karl Deutsch says that power means the ability to be involved in conflict, to
resolve it and to remove obstacles.

● In social science and politics, power is the ability to influence or outright

control the behavior of people. The term “authority” is often used for power
perceived as legitimate by the social structure. Power can be seen as evil or
unjust, this sort of primitive exercise of power is historically endemic to
humans, however as social beings the same

● the concept is seen as good and as something inherited or given for

exercising humanistic objectives that will help, enable and move people.

● …power is the ability to get one’s way—even if it is based on bluff. It is the

ability to exercise one’s will over others.

● …the ability of individuals or groups to make their own interests or concerns

count, even when others resist.

● It sometimes involves the direct use of force. Force is the actual or threatened
use of coercion to impose one’s will on others.
● …‘power is the ability of groups or individuals to assert
themselves—sometimes, but not always—in opposition to the desires of
others’. Many decisions are made without opposition because of the great
power decision-makers wield.

● According to Max Weber (1947), power is ‘the probability that one actor within
a social relationship will be in a position to carry out his own will despite
resistance, regardless of the basis on which this probability rests’.
