an administrative región of the
Philippines.
It consists of Zamboanga del
Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and

The Famous Textile
Weavers

Yaken
A unique cultural group of Sulu
living on Basilan Island south d
Zamboanga are the Yakans, the
famous textile weavers. On
backstre! looms, they turn fine
cotton and silk into remarkable
geometric works art. They
consume days weaving every
fiber to make vibrant and
colorful handmade cloths

Traditional Clothing
They have the BADJU LAPI, a
tight blouse with long sleeves and
gold buttons. Women also wear a
head cloth or a cloth around their

Other varieties of Yakan fabric are
also used as table runners, coin
purse, and bags.

Badjao The Sea Gypsies

The Badjaos are


called "sea gypsies"
because they move
with the wind and
tide on their small
houseboats called
vintas.

The Badjao mat is


characterized by vibrant
colors and highly
spontaneous geometric
patterns and symbols
reflecting the group's way
of life such as crabs,
waves, boats, and marine
life forms.

Samal
On the other hand, the Samals
utilize prominent patterns like
stripes, multicolored squares,
zigzags, and checkered patterns
of white and other colors. It can
also show muted colors and is
comparatively soft in texture.

warrior tribe with excellent fighting skills
and a people who specialize in engraving
methods.

a sharp point.

Dance
The Tausug's Pangalay dance is
performed with elongated brass
fingernails (janggay), arm
movements that look like waves
(taut taut), and various bunga lima
(hand gestures).
