Antonio Pigafetta
Italian.

Studied astronomy, geography, and

cartography.

Educated man and curious of the world

around him.

Applied to become part of Magellan's

voyage.

Labeled as one of the sobresalientes.

Why is his account important?

Antonio Pigafetta's Observation
Natives had a thriving civilization.

Natives were hospitable.

Islands were rich in natural resources (gold,

beautiful bodies of water)

Philippines was rich in marine life.

Natives were consumers of coconuts.

Pigafetta’s account also showed how the voyagers

treated the natives.
Importance of Magellan's Voyage
It proved that the world is not flat but
oblate sphere.

It completed the first circumnavigation of

the world.

It confirmed that Portugal’s eastward route is not

the only way to Spice Islands.

It brought to the attention of Europeans that a

larger body of water exists on the other side of the
Americas, which is the Pacific Ocean.

Altered the map of the world, which Europeans

knew.
