1. Who were the significant Individuals found within the historical data of First
Voyage?

 Antonio Pigafetta – He was born in Vicenza, Italy in 1942. An author, seafarer,


and geographer, who also played a significant role during the First Voyage
around the world.
 Ferdinand Magellan – He started and lead the first voyage exploration to find a
westward route to reach the Spice Islands and open a trading route for Spain.
During this exploration, Magellan brought with him 5 ships and 270 men.
 Raja Siagu – the first island leader who become closely bonded with Magellan.
 Raja Calambu – King of the Island of Zuluan and Caragan (Butuan and
Caragua).
 Raja Humabon – the king or chieftain of Cebu
 Zula – a principal man from the Island of Mactan.
 Duarte Barbosa – the new captain that was elected after Magellan dies in battle.
 Juan Sebastian el Cano – one of Magellan’s remaining men.

2. What were the significant contribution of the Following individuals?

 Antonio Pigafetta – took an important role in the first voyage around the world
where he serves as Magellan’s assistant. During the exploration, he kept an
accurate Journal which is considered to be one of the most crucial pieces of
evidence about various discoveries concerning world geography during the
sixteenth century. The journal which is known to be “First Voyage around the
World” in English, is considered to be one of his most valuable contributions.
 Ferdinand Magellan - He masterminded the first expedition to circumnavigate
the world by the order of king Charles I of Spain. Through this journey, he
discovered what is known “Strait of Magellan”, it is an essential passage between
the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for steam and sailing ships. Furthermore, he is
the First European to reach the Philippines and introduces Spanish rue and
Christianity to the different Islands in the country.
 Raja Siagu and Raja Calambu– Two chieftains from Leyte who are present
during the first mass officiated by Father Pedro Valderrama. The first mass
marked the birth of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines.
 Raja Humabon – The chieftain of Cebu and considered to be one of the First
Filipino natives who embrace Christianity. As an agreement to friendship and
camaraderie, Raja Humabon and Magellan offer their blood to each other in a
ritual known as “sanduguan”.
 Zula – He asked for a boat full of men to Magellan so that he would be able to
fight the chief name of Mactan Silapulapu (Lapulapu), which this battle led to
Magellan’s death.
 Duarte Barbosa – was elected as the new captain after Magellan’s death, but he
was killed by Raja Humabon. Raja Humabon and Henry (Magellan’s translator)
conspired and decided to betray Magellan’s remaining men and kill them.
 Juan Sebastian el Cano – He took charge of one of the two surviving ships
remaining. Together with Pigafetta and the other men who made it out alive, he
carried the expedition back to Spain safely.

Elaborate as to what has transpired amidst the ships that they utilized?

The five ships that were utilized during the First voyage were the following:

 Trinidad (Flagship of Magellan)


 Victoria
 Concepcion
 Santiago
 San Antonio

During the circumnavigation the flagship Santiago was lost at sea, the San Antonio
did not continue the voyage and abandoned the expedition and returned to Spain, and
the Concepcion was damaged and burned by the Crew.
The two remaining surviving ships were Victoria and the Trinidad. However, the
Trinidad started to absorb water and needed to be renovated. All of the crew members
who were still alive could not board the Victoria. Thus, the flagship Victoria and some of
the crew sailed west for Spain, almost three years after embarking on the first
circumnavigation of the world.

In the year 1521 of March Magellan and his men first interacted with locals in the
Philippines, they found first Homonhon Island, which later on joined the Philippine
archipelago. They quickly traveled to Limasawa, near the Island of Leyte, where the
country's first Catholic mass was held.

5. What significant event took place amidst the arrival of Magellan?

 First Mass - The first Mass happened on the near Island of Leyte which marked
the birth of Christianity in the Philippines.
 Proclamation of National Shrine - Island of Limasawa is where the Philippines'
first Mass was celebrated in the Province of Leyte, which is designated as a
national shrine to commemorate the day of the birth of Christianity in the
Philippines.
 The Discover of the Philippines as a rich land - They discovered that the
Philippines is home to various natural resources such as Gold and spices.
 Since the Philippines were discovered, more people are aware that Europeans
opened the door for Spanish colonialism and civilization. The socioeconomic
situation enhanced Pigafetta's account of the Philippines since it provides
information on the cultures and languages that we all knew.
 They were able to discover the language utilized by the Filipinos. Specifically, the
Cebuano which later assisted Francisco Pigafetta in translating Philippine
languages in his journal, and thus considered to be the first recorded document
concerning the Cebuano language.
