The document narrates the events happened on


the First Voyage around the World led by a
Spanish captain-general named Ferdinand
Magellan. This is according to the point-of-view of
Antonio Pigafetta, the first chronicler who
accompanied Magellan in his circumnavigation of
the world.

• He was born in Vicenza in 1492, and he
was an Italian seafarer and geographer.

FERDINAND MAGELLAN

He was a Portuguese explorer who


organized the Spanish expedition to
the East Indies from 1519 to 1522,
resulting in the first circumnavigation of
the Earth.

He served as slave throughout the


expedition of Magellan, he was from
Sumatra (present day Indonesia)

ANTONIO PIGAFETTA

During the expedition, he served


as Magellan's assistant and kept an
accurate journal which later assisted him
in translating the Cebuano language. It is
the first recorded document concerning
the language.

After having his proposed expeditions to the Spice Islands repeatedly


rejected by King Manuel of Portugal, Magellan turned to Charles I, the
young King of Spain (and future Holy Roman Emperor). Under the 1494
Treaty of Tordesillas, Portugal controlled the eastern routes to Asia that
went around Africa. Magellan instead proposed reaching the Spice
Islands by a western route, a feat which had never been accomplished.
Hoping that this would yield a commercially useful trade route for Spain,
Charles approved the expedition, and provided most of the funding.

A mutiny is a rebellion against authority, like when sailors overthrow the captain of a ship

• Strait of Magellan- Pacific Ocean (99 days)


The Strait of Magellan, also called the Straits of Magellan, is a
navigable sea route in Southern Chile separating mainland South
America to the north and Tierra del Fuego to the south. The strait is
considered the most important natural passage between the Atlantic
and Pacific oceans.

• Magellan named Pacific Ocean as “Mar Pacifico” or


“Tranquil” which means “Calm”
Magellan named it “Mar Pacifico” because its waters
appeared calm in comparison to the difficult strait waters.
Magellan underestimated the size of the ocean, and the
ships were unprepared for the journey.

“These people go naked, Italian scholar Antonio


Pigafetta wrote in his account of the Armada de
Molucca’s stay in Zubu or Cebu, “wearing only a
piece of cloth made of palm around their shameful
parts.”

“They have as many wives as they wish, but there is


always a chief one,” he added.

“The males, both large and small, have the head of


their member pierced from one side to the other,
with a pin of gold or of tin as thick as a goose
feather; and at each end of this pin some have a
star-shaped decoration like a button, and others, one
like the head of a cart nail,” Pigafetta said.

• A mass was held in with Raja Humabon and his people attending the
ceremony
• 800 Cebuanos were baptized
• Raja Humabon renamed as Haring Carlos and his wife renamed as
Reyna Juana
• Queen of that Island received a gift from Magellan, a wooden image of
Sto. Nino

“The captain did not wish to fight them, but sent a message to
the natives to the effect that if they would obey the King of
Spain , recognize the Christian King as their sovereign, and
pay us our tribute, he would be their friend but if they wished
otherwise, they should wait and see our lances wounded.”

• According to Datu Zula, a chief of Mactan, Lapu-lapu did not


obey Magellan and refused to pay some goat.

“Seeing that ,Magellan sent some men to burn their houses in


order to terrify them. When they saw their houses burning, they
roused to greater fury.”
• Natives killed some of Magellan’s men

“On that account our captain, ordered as to frontal assault. But the
men took the flight , except ten to fifteen of us who remained with
captain”

• At midnight, sixty of Magellan’s men set out armed with
corselet and helmets, with 30-60 balanghais

“They rushed upon him with iron and bamboo spears and with their cutlasses,

they killed our mirror, our life, our comfort and our true guide.”

“When they wounded him, he turned back many times, to see whether we are

all in boats. There upon beholding them dead, we wounded, retreated, as best

as we could, to the boats, which we already pulling off.”
