EVOLUTION OF COMMUNICATION
Introduction

Communication has improved and evolved to facilitate

our daily activities. In the 21st century, everything related
to communication utilizes technology to ‘send out’ or
disseminate information to a wider audiences.
Information can be ‘sent out’ in many ways. The
invention of cellular phones, television and other
electronic device are important in enhancing
communication.

3
PIGEON
Can also be called as homing pigeon, mail
pigeon or messenger pigeon. Pigeons are
e f fe c t i v e a s m e s s e n g e r s d u e t o t h e i r
natural homing abilities, for its ability to
find its way home over extremely long
distances.

The pigeons are transported to a

destination in cages, where they are
attached with messages, then the pigeon
naturally flies back to its home where the
recipient could read the message.

4
MORSE CODE
Is an old system of encoding messages that
is used to send telegraphic information
using signals and rhythm.

In written communication, Morse code uses

dots and dashes to represent a limited
number of alphabet letters, numbers,
punctuation and special characters of a
given message.

5
TELEPHONE
A telephone is a telecommunication
device that permits two or more users
to conduct a conversation when they
are too far apart to be easily heard
d i r e c t l y.

In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell was the

first to be granted a United States patent
for a device that produced clearly
intelligible replication of the human voice
at a second device.

INTERNET
The Internet, sometimes called simply
" t h e N e t “. I t i s a w o r l d w i d e s y s t e m o f

WHAT IS ICT?

• It is a technology required for information

processing, in particular, the use of electronic
computers, communication devices and
software applications to convert, store,
protect, process, transmit and retrieve
information from anywhere, anytime.

• The modern computer took its shape with

the arrival of your time. It had been around
16th century when the evolution of the
computer started. It continuously improved
itself in terms of speed, accuracy, size, and
price to urge the form of the fashionable day
computer. This long period is often
conveniently divided into the subsequent
phases called computer generations.
FIRST GENERATION (1940 - 1956)
The first generation of computers used vacuum
t ube s as a maj or piece of technology. Vacuum
tubes were larger components and resulted in
first-generation computers being quite large in
size, taking up a lot of space in a room .

The ENIAC is a great example of a first-generation

c o m p u t e r. I t c o n s i s t e d o f n e a r l y 2 0 , 0 0 0 v a c u u m
t ube s , 1 0 ,0 0 0 capaci t or s , and 7 0 ,0 0 0 r e s i s t ors . I t
weighed over 30 tons and took up a lot of space,
requiring a large room to house it. Other
examples of first-generation computers include
t h e E D S A C , I B M 7 0 1 , UN I VA C , a n d M a n c h e s t er
Mark 1.

20
SECOND GENERATION
(1956 - 1963)
The second generation of computers saw the use
of transistors ins tead of vacuum tubes .
Tr a n s i s t o r s w e r e s m a l l e r t h a n v a c u u m t u b e s a n d
allowed computers to be smaller in size, faster in
speed, and cheaper to build .

The first computer to use transistors was the TX-0

and was introduced in 1956. Other computers that
used transistors include the IBM 7070, Philco
Tr a n s a c S - 1 0 0 0 , a n d R C A 5 0 1 .

21
THIRD GENERATION (1964 - 1971)
The third generation of computers introduced the
us e of IC (integrated circuits) in computers . Us ing
I C's in computers, it helped reduce the size of
computers even more than second -generation
c o m p u t e r s , a n d a l s o m a d e t h e m f a s t e r.

Nearly all computers since the mid to late 1960s

have utilized I C's. While the third generation is
considered by many people to have spanned from
1964 to 1971, I C's are still used in computers
today. Some of the examples of thes e computers
were the IBM 370 series, CDC 7600, and B2500.

22
FOURTH GENERATION
(1971 - PRESENT)
The fourth generation of computers took
advantage of the invention of the microprocessor,
more commonly known as a CPU. Microproces s ors,
w ith integr ated cir cuits , helped make it pos s ible
for computers to fit easily on a desk and for the
introduction of the laptop.

I ntel created the firs t microproces s or, followed

by Apple in which the first Apple computer was
created, and then followed again by the I BM
becaus e of its firs t pers onal computer.

23
FIFTH GENERATION
(PRESENT TO FUTURE)
The fifth generation of computers is beginning to
us e A I (artificial intelligence), an exciting
technology advancement with many potential
applications around the world.

Modern computers are adv ancing rapidly,

becoming more efficient together with the
inventions of new technologies such as;

- Silicone chips
- Proces s ors
- Robotics
- Virtual Reality
- I ntelligent systems
- Programs which translates languages

NEW ERA COMPUTER
A f t e r t h e f i f t h g e n e r a t i o n c o m p u t e r, t h e
technology of computer has become more
advanced, modern and sophisticated.

I n the new era of computers, expert system such as

teleconferencing and speech -recognition system
have been invented as part of modern world
communication tools.

The latest inventions in the era of computers are;
