1.0 Introduction
SIWES stands for Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme. It is a program initiated by the Nigerian
government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) to provide Nigerian students in higher
institutions with practical industrial work experience related to their field of study. The Siwes program is
mandatory for all students in tertiary institutions studying courses such as engineering, technology,
medical sciences, agriculture, environmental sciences, applied arts, and social sciences.
The program is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application by
providing students with hands-on experience in a real work environment. Through the Siwes program,
students are able to apply their academic knowledge to real-life situations, gain valuable work experience,
and develop skills that will help them in their future careers.
Siwes is usually undertaken during the long vacation period of the academic year, and it typically lasts for
a period of four to six months. During this period, students are placed in organizations and companies that
are related to their field of study, where they are expected to work under the supervision of experienced
professionals.
At the end of the Siwes program, students are required to write a report detailing their experiences, the
skills they acquired, and the lessons learned during the program. This report is a crucial part of the Siwes
program as it serves as evidence of the student's participation and successful completion of the program.
