SUBJECT: LUBRICATION REQUIREMENT FOR COUPLING

Purpose:
The coupling lubricant grease, tends to harden with age and could cause high vibration. High vi-
bration can result in equipment damage or reduce equipment life. It is recommended that, as part
of routine annual major maintenance operation, coupling grease be removed and replaced.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
This service bulletin is a revision of the old service bulletin #1196 which was issued in March 1975.

ACTION REQUIRED:
1. Disassemble the coupling in accordance to the procedure provided in the operation and
maintenance manual. Scrape off the grease (if the grease is too hard and cannot be
scraped, it may be necessary to heat the affected parts prior to scraping).
2. Reassemble the coupling following the procedure listed in the operation and
maintenance manual.
3. For coupling assembly Solar P/N 909849C1 ( Figure 1) remove the setscrew in the large
diameter of each coupling sleeves’ grease plugs. Insert one tube of lubricant Solar P/N

970514C1 in each coupling half. Each coupling half require 1-1/2 pounds of lubricant.
Reinstall the setscrews. Remove the two pipe plugs located on opposite side of the center
body. Apply lubricant until it starts to flow out of the opposite hole. Center body requires
1/2 pound of grease. Reinstall the pipe plugs.
Coupling assembly Solar P/N 128740 ( Figure 2) does not have any lubricating plug for
the center body and does not require any grease for center body.
