ELEMENTS USED ON DONALDSON MODEL TTD
SELF CLEANING AIR CLEANERS

—REVISION NOTICE—
This Service Bulletin identifies a revised replacement procedure
and inserts pictures that identify filter element damage. Revision

Compliance: Operation, Information

Purpose:
This Service Bulletin provides necessary information on the life span and replacement of air filter
elements P/N 951339C1

GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Donaldson TTD self cleaning air filter system was initially installed on Solar Turbine engines
in 1977. It has been Donaldson’s prime design characteristic that the TTD in turbine applications
provide high level air filtration for a period of 18 months to 2 years without maintenance This fact
has been confirmed on 200 Solar Turbine applications.

NUMBER: 11.1/104A
It has been found that the filter elements are beginning to show some deterioration (pin holes, leaks
in the media and splitting of the pleats) after 15,000 to 16,000 hours (over two years in severe
service high dust concentrations coupled with high ambient temperatures and low humidity). In less
severe service (lower dust concentrations and a more humid environment including cold weather
operation) some 25,000 to 30,000 hours of operation (i.e. over four years) has been achieved with
some slight filter element deterioration (pin holes) now beginning to be apparent Also the filter
media is made of a special cellulose blend material and undergoes aging and strength changes even
without the stresses placed upon it in self cleaning reverse-pulse applications. Deterioration of the
filter elements seriously reduces the filtration efficiency of the TTD and operating a turbine with
worn and punctured elements could involve turbine fouling, contamination, erosion and foreign
object damage.

ACTION REQUIRED:
It is thus recommended that filter elements which have been in operation for 2 years or more be
sample inspected for pin holes, pleat splits, leaks and general deterioration. This inspection should
be done by "candling" or examining the filter media closely in a dark room with a bright light
inside the filter element (see figure 6) About 6 to 12 elements should be inspected every 6 months
thereafter. Replacement of all elements should be initiated at the first sign of pinholes, splits or
deterioration (see figure 7). It is recommended that the filter elements not be continued in service
beyond 4 Years .

PARTS REQUIRED
New elements can be ordered directly from Solar or Donaldson Company.

REPLACEMENT
1. Shut unit down and tag master switch.
2. Remove old element by unscrewing the crank (crank is part of the element). Figure 4
and Figure 5.
3. To install a new element, hang the retainer nut on the hanger bracket and tighten the
crank.
4. When the necessary quantity of elements has been replaced restore system to normal.
