ABSTRACT

Remaining human skeletal has a great impact for sex estimation. Sometimes, complete skeletal were
disappeared or unable to collect. Due to incomplete skeletal, anthropologist need to evaluate alternative techniques
for sex estimation from remaining skeletal which could be found in the field. Sternum and the fifth to ninth ribs are
considered to have potential for sexing. Three groups were used in this study. Group 1 consist of 413 adult individuals
from Hamann-Todd Human for create prediction equations for sex estimation. Group 2 consist of 33 adults individuals
had thorax CT scan from Israel for generate cross-validation the accuracy of the prediction equation. Group 2 consist of
15 adult individuals from Anthropological Collection at Tel Aviv University for examine the validity of the virtual method.
Each individual in Group 1 were measured using traditional tool (osteometric board and caliper). Group 2 and group 3’s
individual were reconstructed using 3D surface mesh from CT stakes as virtual method and measured from landmark
placed on their surface. According to results from group 2, the measurement by virtual method was valid when
compared with the traditional method. In the logistic regression analysis shows the eighth and ninth ribs has the highest
success rate for sex estimation. For the sternum, female Israel appeared a higher rate of success than male and similar
to the female European American sample. Ancestry is one of the impact factor for improve the success rates. The
equation for sex estimation base on the left sixth, left eighth, and left ninth ribs. In conclusion, similar to traditional
method, virtual method has validation for measuring sternum and rib. Sternum and ribs are capable for sex estimation.
These method gives forensic scientists and anthropologist an alternative ways to estimate sex from human remain when
partial skeleton is available and the equation of sex estimations from this study were provide success rate of each rib
individually which is useful when only partial skeletons were found.
