INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the following question in a five-paragraph essay format. Provide clear explanations and
specific examples in your answer. Include an introduction paragraph with a thesis statement, three body paragraphs, with
clear topic sentences and a conclusion paragraph. Include one specific example for each body paragraph.

STRUCTURE:

 INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH
 Introduction/Hook: 1-2 sentences
 Lead: 1-2 sentences. Start connecting to your overall topic. Generally, introduce your topic.
 Thesis: ONE SENTENCE
o In the novel The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien, … (include the book title and author in your thesis
statement.
o EXAMPLE: In the novel The Exam, by John Smith, students should study their homework questions,
complete their exam reviews, and practice test questions to pass their exams.
 BODY 1
 Topic Sentence: 1 sentence
 Point: 1 sentence
 Proof: 1 sentence (A specific example from the text that is written in your own words for an exam)
 Explain: 2-3 sentences – explain how your proof/example proves your overall topic/thesis
 Closing Sentence – 1 sentence

 BODY 2 – same as above

 BODY 3 – same as above

 CLOSING PARAGRAPH
 Restate Thesis: 1 sentence – Restate thesis in a new way
 Sum Up Body Paragraph 1: 1 sentence
 Sum Up Body Paragraph 2: 1 sentence
 Sum Up Body Paragraph 3: 1 sentence
 Final thoughts/conclusions: 1-3 sentences

write in the correct style for your final exam.

and novel studied in the course, in order to make connections between:
