1. This paper consists of TWO sections with THREE questions.


2. Answer ONE question from EACH SECTION A and B.
3. Begin EACH question in the area provided.
4. This paper is worth 70 marks.
5. Use STANDARD ENGLISH, ESSAY format and the PRESENT TENSE to develop
ALL responses fully.
6. You are advised to spend some time to read through the paper and plan your
answers.

SECTION A – DRAMA
Answer THE question in this section.
Based on your knowledge of The Tempest by William Shakespeare, answer THE question
below in essay format (continuous prose- about 400 words) using the PRESENT TENSE.

THE TEMPEST – William Shakespeare


1. “In The Tempest, the theme of exploitation of power is explored”.
Write an essay in which you describe TWO incidents in which a character exploits
power. In this essay, you must also, discuss how ONE character is affected in ONE
of incidents described, and then examine ONE dramatic technique that Shakespeare
uses to explore the theme exploitation of power.

SECTION B – POETRY
Answer ONE question in this section.
Based on your knowledge of the selected CSEC poems, answer ONE of the questions below
in essay format (continuous prose- about 400 words) using the PRESENT TENSE.

EITHER
2. The poems “Once Upon a Time” and “Dreaming Black Boy” have speakers who
have a desire to escape from their circumstances. Write an essay in which you
describe the situation from which EACH speaker desires to escape. You must also
discuss the conclusion ONE speaker arrives at concerning the situation. Finally, for
EACH poem you must examine ONE device EACH poet uses explore the desire to
escape.

OR
3. From the prescribed list, Choose TWO poems you have studied that present someone
who faces a challenging situation. Write an essay in which you describe the
challenging situation in EACH poem. In your essay you must also discuss how the
person affected responds to the challenging situation discussed, and examine ONE
device that EACH poet uses to highlight the challenging situation (use evidence from
the poem to support your answer).
